Unless there is not a hardware switch and the only manufacturer that I know of that did that was Compaq/HP about 5 or so years ago. Typically there are no drivers to be installed for a mouse (touch pad) as a generic set is in the driver library of the operating system. 9 times out of 10 it is a hardware failure. With that being said, if it has warranty send it in, if it does not, (although it may just be a loose connection or the touch pad itself) most repair shops are going to run anywhere from 150 - 300 dollars just to crack it open. Best option is to get a small USB mouse, unless you just really want the touch pad.

Touch pad double click is not working. How to cure?

make sure you have the right mouse selected click start control panel mouse hardware you will see which mouse is selected in xp

I have found that the best way to adjust your mouse settings is to create a control panel in your bottom toolbar scroll to the bottom of your screen right click you will see an array of options select the toolbar option then select desktop

then you will see the desktop in the bottom toolbar select the 2 >>arrow heads then all control panel items then select mouse this is in WINDOWS 7

in XP you will have to select the new toolbar option once you have that a browse option select my computer then control panel then a control panel option will be in the bottom toolbar

for the double click this will be in the folder options follow previous to get to control panel items
click start control panel navigate folder options tick in the double click to open circle

hope this helps

The cursor jumps backward in text. It jumps several lines up and down.It also does not respond to a simple left tap when I need it to open or close wish to delete something. I am not accidently doing...

Replace the mouse with a known good working one.
If you are not using a mouse (bad news) the touch pad may be failing.
In that case, an easy test and fix is to disable it in "Control Panel" then install a mouse in the USB Port.

If the problem is corrected then it is your touch pad.

Here is a link to the manual from Dell. FREE!

See Page 42 on disabling the Touch Pad.

Go to EBay and insert "6000 Dell Inspiron touch pad". It's cheap but difficult to replace.

My dell inspiron 6400 touchpad scroll not warking with window 7 ultimate

Try going to Control Panel - Hardware and sound - mouse. Once you have the menu for the mouse open, go to device settings. Click settings, and all of the advanced controls for the functions of your mouse pad can be found there.

I can not disable touchpad of INSPIRON 1545 of DELL Computers There is no option for disabling touch pad in the MOUSE option of Control Panel

Go to the Control Panel. Under the 'Hardware and Sound' options, click 'Mouse'immortal4u.png

Since you have a Dell laptop, you'll have a special tab called 'Dell touchpad' in the window that pops up. Click on the touchpad picture in the window.

In the new window that appears, click 'Device Select'
immortal4u_1.png

Click on the 'Disable' radio button to disable the touchpad completely. If you want to disable the touchpad of your Dell laptop only when an external device like a mouse is attached, check the last option that says 'Disable Touchpad/Pointing Stick when external USB mouse is present'

immortal4u_2.png

That's it. You've disabled your laptop's touchpad for good. If you don't find an option to manage your touchpad in Mouse settings, you have to install Synaptics drivers from here. Similar options can be found in other laptops as well.

Good luck ! if your problem is solved don't forget to rate

Mouse wont move

Are you referring to the mouse pointer when using the touch pad? To isolate the problem, try to use a USB mouse and see if the pointer will move. If the USB mouse works, then the touch pad could be disabled.

Refer to the user manual of the laptop and see on how you can enable the touch pad.

If same problem occur even though you're using a USB mouse, contact the manufacturer of the computer for second opinion or repair.

Good luck and have a great day!
