Tape will not eject from camera.

My Cannon GL2 has a tape jammed or the eject mechanism is not working correctly. I am unable to record on the tape or eject it. Is there a manual override solution or some other trick for releasing the tape?

Why does my cassette player eject tape

Auto-eject mechanisms normally will eject the tape at the end of the tape. However, if the tape jams or is wound too tightly, it can cause the auto-eject to activate. This prevent tape breakage. Commercially recorded music tapes rarely get too tight, but the cheaper C90 and C120 tapes that people buy often will do this.

VCR won't eject tape or play & powers off

It sounds as though it's jammed. If you're mechanically inclined you can unplug the unit, take the cover off, and manually eject it. Just look for the motor that drives the load basket and manually spin the shaft. The guide-posts should retract towards the tape and the basket will then lift and eject. Just be aware that whatever bit of tape that's out of the cassette won't spool back in. You will have to do that bu hand once it's out.
When you're done, plug it back in and let it cycle then put an old cheap tape in and see if it works. If not, take it in for repair.

When I press record on my Cannon GL2 everything looks like it's working fine, (it indicates it's recording) but, when I view the tape nothing was recorded. I ran a tape cleaner and it worked for less than...

This is most likely caused by a damaged or misaligned video drum and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

I had a similar problem with a Cannon Optura PI and had to send it in. It was better, but I still have problems on occasion. If your intent is to transfer all the tapes to media, I would suggest purchasing Toshiba's DVD Video Recorder/Video Cassette Recorder. Model: DVR620KU. I use a VHS-C Cassette Adapter to play my VHS-C tapes in and the dubbed them to a DVD. Works great. Unfortunately, there is no 8mm/VHS Adapters, since 8mm, Hi8, miniDV are different formats with different technical characteristics than VHS. These formats were never developed with the intention to be mechanically compatible with past or current VHS technology. Your best bet would to borrow a HI-8 Camcorder and then dub your tapes to DVD's using the Toshiba machine. Here is a link to the Toshiba machine.
Good luck

GL2 - Tape gets jammed everytime. Eject lights up immediately

This problem is usually related to the Dew Sensor, Unfortunately you can not by-pass the dew sensor. I paid a repair to fix, but he could not. Canon must repair the dew sensor.
I have same prob. I just capture directly to computer since my tape will not open. I would be interested in buying cameras like this, i can use them to still monitor images.

My canon gl2 won't record because it keep telling me to eject the tape. I put in a new tape and the samething keeps on happening. What can I do about it?

You may be the victim of dirty clogged head. When the tape is incerted on GL2, it is searching for the data from the tape but if the heads are clogged it will not communicate so, the processing computer think the tape is damaged. Procedure to clean the head. This may not clean but let's try. Purchase a head cleaner tape and run it for about 10 seconds but not more. Try to insert regular clean tape and try it. If this does not resolve the problem, GL2 need cleaning and adjustment by technician. Good luck -James. For further assistance email, go to

The immediate remedy may be cleaning the video heads. The head is not receiving the data from the inserted tape because it may be clogged. Use head cleaning tape for about 10 seconds but NO MORE. Try again, if not you may need to clean and adjust by trained technicians. Good luck -James. For further assistance, go to

Dirty video head! Playback newly opened blank tape for five minutes, after that eject, reinsert, playback then eject again five times, these will serve as your video head cleaner, never use "video head cleaning cassette tape" for it will only damage your camera. Most camera has built in video head cleaner installed inside and activates only when you insert, initial play/rec, and ejects a tape. If the problem is still there you need pro fix then.[:0)
