Question about Washing Machines

Washer has burning smell and does not spin.

Last wash, last rinse and spin. I smelled a burning smell, I heard the motor running, but the washer was not spinning. I turned off and waited for door to unlock. Clothes were clean and ready for dryer, but the smell of buning was very strong inside washer. I don't want to run again without some service.

Washer agitates but will not spin. Burning smell coming from motor

The water pump could be stuck, or broken so the pulley on the pump is not spinning, while the belt is, which gives you the burning smell. Could also mean the motor is overheating giving you the burning smell. You will have to open the back and observe whats happening while its running. Just keep your hands clear while its working.

My wife put a load in last night and a couple of hours later the laundry room smelled like something was hot and the washer had stopped on the spin cylce. The control panel didn't feel hot but I unplugged...

Something caught in pump & belt burning. Motor start capacitor (If fitted) is US & needs replacing. Timer faulty, motor has burning smell, replace timer & or motor. Motor switchgear failed motor sitting there & humming, adjust switchgear or replace motor.

Maytag Atlantis shut down during rinse cycle.

Contacted a local repair shop. They told me that if I got it spinning again, the motor was most likely ok. It is protected by a thermal switch that turns it off when it begins to overheat. The smell was to be expected as it was overheating; the difficutly restarting was because it hadn't cooled off enough yet. We have now used it a few times for small loads. Still getting a smell, but the wash cycle is completing ok.
