Question about Skype IM

No sound on Skype

I'm not sure why my webcam's microphone doesn't seem to be working. It's a new webcam, and neither Sykpe's troubleshooter nor the webcam's troubleshooter could straighten it out.

    have picture but no audio

This happened to me after I downloaded the latest version of Skype (3.8). I've checked my sound settings over and over and the mic works fine except with Skype. I have Realtek AC97 too, so maybe it's a compatibility problem. I even installed an updated driver for Realtek and re-installed Skype 3.6 hoping to solve the problem, but no luck. Running out of ideas here, so if anyone can help I'd be very grateful.

skype has taken over msn messenger sounds and games sounds. Have
changed the sound within XP home but still it keeps picking up on
starting up, the usb skype phone.

When making a skype call, and I play a game, the sound of the game can be heard on the phone, but not through my speakers.

matter what I try and change, each time the default is picked as the
USB phone. I had it firstly in a USB hub, then was advised to plug into
main unit, the result is still the same!

    Many thanks

When I syne onto skype people can see me but cannot hear me

First Make sure that both you and the person you are calling are using the latest version of Skype.

If your contact cannot hear you, it can be either on your side or theirs.

Please confirm that you have done the following:

If you go in the Tool menu, then Options, you will get a section called Audio settings.

There you can chose the right Input device, in your case you want the microphone of your webcam, and once it is selected try talking and you should see a "green line" showing as you speak confirming that the device is properly recording.

If the green line is short, you might want to boost the volume by moving the blue dot to the right. You can also uncheck the "adjust my volume automatically" since it can put your volume very low every time a loud noise is caught by the microphone.

If the camera microphone is not listed, installing your webcam software again should make it available after a reboot.

After That, try making a test call (Echo/Sound Test Service). If you can record your own voice and hear it played back to you, then the problem may lie with the person you are calling. If so, ask them to follow these instructions.

Hope This Information is Helpful.

Anytime I try to talk to somebody , my skype stop working. please help me

First thing first, I would reinstall it, or make sure that you have an updated version. It sounds so miniscule, but it usually does the trick. If that does not work, I would contact Skype technical support.

Before doing so here is the standard list FYI:
To make a video call, you and the person you are calling will need:
Here is the connections trouble shoot website:

but definitely, if all requirements are met, I would give Skype a call :]

When on skype the person i am calling cannot hear me but i can hear them

It sounds like your microphone settings may be incorrect. Make sure if your computer has an internal microphone that the settings are set to use the correct device. You can check in the Skype preferences.

If you have an external microphone (one you must plug in to the computer) try testing it on another computer to make sure it has not malfunctioned.

Cannot hear my voice in microphone

These instructions are for Skype 4.2 for Windows or below. Before continuing, we strongly recommend that you upgrade to the latest version. For Skype 5.0 and above, refer to these instructions. If you're not sure which version of Skype you're using, it's easy to find out.
If the person you are talking to in a Skype-to-Skype call cannot hear you there are a number of steps you can take in order to help you set up your system correctly so that others can hear you.

Try calling Echo123. If you can hear your own recorded voice then your playback device (headphones, speakers, etc) and microphone are set up correctly and the problem might stem from low internet bandwidth, or that the person you are calling has not set up their sound devices properly.
If you cannot hear your own voice in Echo123 check that your microphone is on.

Test Echo123 again to see if the microphone now works..

If none of these steps work you might need to adjust your computers sound setup. Have a look at our Sounds Setup Guide.

Also check out our Troubleshooter for more help with common sound setup issues.

Hi, i have just installed my Skype and have bought a Logitech Webcam, have done the Skype check etc but I cannot get audio when I am on a video call? We can see each other and I can hear the othe rperson...

Hi Bronwyn,

What you need to do is to open Skype and go into the Preferences or Options and select Audio. There is a drop down menu to select what audio (microphone) you want to use. There should be a selection there for the Logitech webcam. (Most webcams have a mic in them.)

The other option would be to get an external microphone and connect it to the proper connector on the front or back of your computer and select it from the menu.

Thanks for using Fixya.

My friends can see &HEAR me BUT I CANNOT hear them. what can i do?

If you are sure that your mic is working properly, then take a look at this illustrated picture:

On the skype menu, click "Call" and select "Audio Settings", this window will open up, the first slider (option) is for Microphone.. when you speak on the Mic, the indicator will show the status. Simply move the first slider to the extreme right and save the settings.
If this doesn't seem to work, then you need to check your computer sound settings. Open the sound settings and make sure that Microphone is selected as the default recording device, and is not muted.

Since you didn't mention the details about your computer, I can't make this specific. If you need further help, let me know with more details like the Operating System installed on your computer, the sound card...etc...

Good luck..

Thanks for using FixYa.

People can only here me faintly at the other end

If you bought a webcam, dont assume it has a microphone built in, not all of them do.. if you do have one, then make sure it isnt muted (double clicking the speaker in the system tray next to your clock, and make sure the mic isnt muted, if it isnt and you still have no sound, the microphone header on your motherboard may be connected incorectly or not at all, if you are plugging the microphone into the front of the PC, take it out and use the pink plug at the back (one one labelled with a picture of a microphone).
Check your sound preferences by double clicking the speaker icon in the corner of the monitor first. Make sure it's working there, it's in the Input Tab. Then when you are sure it's working there, go into Skype preferences and change your mic input to the appropriate mic input, and then use the Test Call to check your microphone settings to see if they work, if you hear yourself then others will be able to hear you.

Thank you!
