Question about Aiwa XR-C303RW Shelf System

Open Question

Fix it - how?

My system was disconnected from power while I was gone for a couple of weeks. When I hooked it up to power, I get the "set up" across the screen on stereo system - which locks up the CD-RW "record" and so there's no more recording ability to a CD from tapes and/or cd, etc. The system is only 5 years old and had I known that this was going to cause a problem and require major $$ for repair, I would have never purchased it. Warranty is history! Any suggestions other than incinerator?? Thanks! I've tried the on/off/ like owners manual says but to no avail. I've called AIWA "customer no service" and that's no help!

SOURCE: I have a NSX-V70 stereo. Tapes and CD do not work, FM/AM is fine

Your unit needs a little TLC. Let me address the likely problems/solutions:

1) Tape deck stuck - The most common problem here is that the belt has gotten slippery. This has prevented the mechanism from resetting to a known position and that is what prevents the door from opening. Hopefully when you pried it open, nothing bot broken.

2) Both tape drives run from the same motor and use different belts. The same applies to the second deck as the first. The belts are sliping and need to be replaced.

3) The CD lens is probably dirty and needs to be cleaned. The fact that the CD stops and an attempt is made to play it suggests that the optics are working enough to detect the disc. Clean the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol and that should resoplve the CD problem.

If you have not opened up these before, I would not suggest you start without someone around who has. There are 3 belts that need to be chagned for the cassette section to work. Plan on $15-$20 for the belts.

The system is always in standby mode and do not turn ON

The problem you are describing is typical of audio output ic problem when there is a high current load the protection circuit kicks in preventing further damage. But lets check a couple things! turn down volume, power off, and remove speaker wires from the back. now power on, if protection kicks in the audio ic needs to be replaced, if it powers up properly checks wires for shorts and speaker issues and hook up one at a time until protect comes on revealing the problem.

My Crosley CR87CD console does not power up. I could be the power switch or is there a fuse of breaker inside? Are relacement tuner/CD modules avaialble to put in this cabinet?

It very well could be the power switch. I have repaired two of these where the on/off switch has gone bad, and the original part isn't available.

First, does the switch seem to be operating correctly? That is, does it feel like a definite click when you turn the control, or does it seem "mushy" in its operation? If the switch doesn't feel normal it's certainly at fault. It may still not work correctly even it feels normal, though. You can test it by connecting a jumper across the switch terminals while the unit is unplugged, and then plug it back in. If the power comes on you know the switch is bad.

The trouble, as I said before, is that the original part isn't available. My fix in both cases has been to install a new power switch on the rear panel and wire it to the circuit board inside, and solder a jumper wire across the bad switch terminals. The rear panel has ventilation holes that are convenient for putting in a small switch, and it's easy to reach. It's a little less convenient than the original, but it's a cheap and simple fix. For someone with a little soldering experience it's just a few minutes' work.

Thanks for using Fixya!

After hooking it up to my television, the stereo shuts off after a couple of seconds or usually a loud noise through it.. i have it hooked up with different speakers, but i don't think that's the problem....

I am curious to understand what connections have you got in place with the TV. Do you actually hear the TV sound before the Stereo shuts off?

Are you convinced the problem is not on the TV end? I am assuming you have got a manual for this unit. If not you can check it out from here.

Tuner does not work

If you're trying to listen to FM, and are indoors, and your walls are fairly thick, or brick and mortar, chances are you're not getting a strong enough signal.
Modern minisystems like yours come without an external antenna, and use their power cords in lieu of one. Try extending the cord, not coiling it, for better reception.
Other than that, your system may have had a spontaneous problem to its FM tuning module, though not likely.
Good luck!

No power

It is possible that during your absence, there was a power outage/interruption, a thunderstorm or even a spike in the power lines.

Initially, have you tried a full hard reset? If not, pls unplug from the mains. Most current devices would reset and revert back to factory default settings (assuming no internal hardware fault) when unplugged for a considerable period of time (a couple of hours).

Other than the above, there is no other user action possible as the unit has to be opened requiring knowledge with electronic components and circuitry. If the full reset is still a no go, then perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

You have a short in the internal power of this unit. It is going into protect and shutting itself off to keep it from damaging anymore of the internal electronics. Very likely a voltage regulator has gone bad or a power capacitor has gone bad. You will not be able to repair this yourself unless you are skilled in electronic repair. I would suggest contacting the manu and seeing if they have a authorized repair shop in your area. If not ask around and see who is a reputable repair shop in your area.

Power cuts out

This problem happend to my sony system about a year ago. It was the amp that blew in mine because of the fan inside the system was not coming on when it should of. I found that when i had put my PC in the AUX jacks it blew the fan on me, so every time the volume got to 15 the system would just shut down and not come back on at all, or it would need time to cool down before it would start up again. Take it to a shop and get it looked at by someone that knows what there doing. Please dont try and do this yourself.
