Question about Actiontec (GS503AD3-01) Modem

1 Answer

Modem suddenly needs resetting very often - failing?

My Actiontec modem GT701-WG has worked great for a long time, but suddenly a few days ago I had to reset it by pulling out the power plug and starting it up again. That worked for a day or so, but it is now to the point where I need to do that every time I want to get online; perhaps every hour. Any ideas? Do I need a new modem?

Yes this is a normal method to setup a wireless network.
To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps :-
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router.

I did a firmware upgrade on my Gt701-wg modem QW06.5.3.60.3.8.6 and now i can't acess the modem configuration page

First, the upgrade may have replaced the default functionality. Second the wireless signal capacity allowabel for most computers requires letting the system aware of the new setup to share signals. The software is on the computer however requirign to adjust the wireless distribution to accept new codes to retain usual fucntionality.

Trying to change from actiontec gt701 to actiontec gt701-wg. after new modem is hooked up, internet light stays red. switched by to old modem and all is fine. anyone know why internet light stayed red?

The reason why your internet light is red for the actiontec gt701-wg is because it is not yet configure. You need to access the gui of this router. enter the username and password for your internet connection. You can contact your ISP provider so they can walk you through for the steps on how to configure your new router.

The old router has green light because it was already configured by your ISP provider.

I have an actiontec gt701-wg the power light stays orange all the time, and will not power cycle. anyone know of a way to fix this? it kind of sucks nothing really was wrong with the modem until this...

Try a factory reset - make sure you know your ISP login details and settings - the username and password should have been sent to you by the ISP - and all the router settings should be available on their website Reset Switch Modem’s factory default settings, depress and hold the Reset Switch for approximately 10 seconds. The reset process will start about 10 seconds after releasing the Reset Switch, or until the Power light glows amber. Otherwise, I have seen a couple of these units do that - and the only solution was to purchase a new one.

Did you Unplug the Modem from Your Electrical Outlet, AND Unplug the Telephone Line coming in too, for 5 minutes?? Give "it" a chance to Completely Re-set/Reboot..I have a GT701 DSL Modem, that's what I did, and it worked fine. "IF" that doesn't work I would go to "Support" at either Action-Tech or Your DSL/IP Provider. Hope this Helps you.

Yes, if the other isp is also providing dsl services, but you will have to configure the device the other isp will not help you with that.

Actiontec GT701-WG won't operate wirelessly

In looking on the internet the unit is a DSL gateway. Trying to use it on cable internet is not a real good way to set up your network because I believe the router is waiting for a DSL sync before the services turn on. I would spend the money and pick up a Linksys or Netgear G router, there around $50.

Actiontec GT701-WG doesn't recognize a DVR on the LAN

I think the screen you may be looking at is the Application layer forwarding screen, the drop down box being populated by DHCP clients, that's why it isn't seeing the DVR. The DMZ Hosting screen doesn't have a drop down box, it only requires an IP address to be entered.

Hope this helps!
