Could be a number of things causing this, is it just one card or any memory card that it will not format.

If only the one card, I would suggest it is the memory card at fault or that it has been formated as FAT32 on a computer, cameras do not like this setting so you could try formating in the FAT format and then re try formating in the camera.

If it is any card that it will not format then you may have bent CF pins in the camera, try taking the card out and looking down the slot with a bright light, you will see all of the gold pins pointing at you, if you see any bent over then that is your problem, you could try rebending them yourself if you are handy, but normally pays to get a tech to replace the pin set, which luckly on the canons is on a seperate board so is relatively cheap to replace.

I bought a new memory stick for my canon eos 40d and took it out to download pictures and now the camera won't work, it says format card to camera

You need to format the card in-camera. This is done via the camera menu. The camera needs to format it to it's own file system, you shouldn't format the card in a computer.

Unable to format CF card

Try formatting it on your computer...make sure you are formatting "that" drive and not your C drive.

Canon 40D and 64Gb CF Card

What i find is that the larger the card the slower the write recovery in taking pictures. If you are an action photographer this is a pain as things happen fast . To have the camera take so long to recover from a write leaves you open to losing some excellent shots. So my rule of thumb is use smaller value cards. If you are just a happy shots photographer then this probably doesn't really matter.

Thanks for using Fixya

CF Card is not formatting. When I try to format it, the camera says. "Cannot format. Change the CF card." - but it can not read any card

Take a look inside your camera's CF card slot. I suspect that you may have a bent pin in there. If so, don't fret. Although professional repair would be more costly than the value of the camera, there is a very good chance that you can repair this yourself. Eos 40d error 99

Error 99 can mean many things. Have you installed the latest firmware for the camera (version 1.1.1)? If you don't have, download it here (for equipment purchased in USA or Puerto Rico):

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eos40d/eos40d-firmware-e.html

If you have the latest firmware, try this:

  1. Switch off the camera and remove the CF card and battery
  2. Keep the camera idle for 30 min
  3. Clean all the contacts of the camera (battery contacts, lens contacts etc) with an eraser. Do this keeping the camera facing down so that no debris fall into the camera.
  4. Attach the lens and insert the battery.
  5. Switch on the camera
  6. Insert the CF card
  7. If the error persists, format the card again
  8. If this does not work, try using another CF card.

Err99 40d canon body only

Try the following diagnosis steps: -

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.
