Vista doesn't control the system until the OS starts to boot. The system is controlled by BIOS first. The first thing you need to do is to set the proper boot order. When booting from a CD Vista has absolutly NO control. In order to do this you need to access BIOS from the initial startup screen, wheather it be an ASUS logo or a BIOS POST. This is usually accomplished by pressing either "Delete", "F1", "F2", or "F12" at this point. Most of the new notebooks are "F2" at the BIOS POST or ASUS flash screen. Check the screen for a message that states "Press XXX to enter setup." (XXX being the key to press). There may be a password locking BIOS, that was either set by you or someone who owned the notebood prior to you. Either enter the password (if known). If unknown, press "F9" on boot and it will be returned back to factory state. Once in BIOS setup, look through the menus for a boot menu to set the boot order for CD/DVD-ROM first, may be also called removable media. Save and Exit. Insert your Windows XP install disk, the disk SHOULD be bootable, if you had gotten it legally. After the ASUS LOGO or the BIOS POST you should see a screen that asks you to press any key to boot from a CD, press any key and proceed with the install, ensure you repartition and format the hard drive. Vista is different than XP.
The first thing you have to do is go to acer support website to see if your model supports downgrade to XP, in other words XP drivers for the model you have, if it does get back to me for more help, if it doesn't your stuck with vista i'm affraid
kind regards
