Question about Akai LCT3201TD 32 in. LCD Television

32''Akai tv/dvd combo lcd 3201 failure

I bought this unit at Sam's club about 2.5 years ago and was fine till a few weeks ago.
first the tv picture froze with distorted wavy lines and then went black for good. The dvd player continued working for about 2 more weeks and then went dead, black as well.
I've taken the back off and I don't see any leaky or swollen components anywhere, so I think it may be the power supply. Where's a reliable place to take it or send it for repair (i understand the part is unavailable).?
Any ideas?
I was offered a repair by a 'Jaimie Hernandez'' who I saw post a few relevant messages on this site. If possible and you have any feed back that he's legit respected here, I'd appreciate it.
If you know any resources for dx and repair in or near Riverside, California, I'd appreciate that too.
thank you,
Jack Laurie

I don't mind investing $90(what I've been offered from someone on the boards) to fix a powersupply if there's a reasonable chance that is the issue? They just 'fail' and that's it? I'm not circuit board trained , but I have a voltmeter. is there not some way to easily try to diagnose the failed components for attempt self repair. (after all, what's to lose, the advise was basically, 'throw it away')

FIrst of all, being an LCD set, there are no convergence ICs. Second, the LCD going black could be the power supply or it could be the secondary high voltage supply that provides the "backlight" for hte LCD. Without seeing the set it is hard to determine where the problem lies. That being said, the power supply portion is what is called a "switch mode" supply. These are not easy to diagnose. At this point, it would be wise to get a detailed estimate from a reputable service shop. That estimate would cost at least $50, but should detail the portions of hte set that have failed. Armed with that info, we may be able to walk you through the actual repair.

Keep us psoted.

I will be brief:

"first the tv picture froze with distorted wavy lines"

That is probably one of the convergence ICs that has blown, test the pico fuses on the convergence board.

Probably after one of the ICs had blown completely the TV had detected the fault and activated the protection switch, that is the reason why the tv does not turn on anymore.

You do not know if it is a power supply, testing voltages require working with live power, and is a job that should be performed by a technician.

All you can do on the power board is checking if one of the power capacitors had blown.

A good solution can be contacting Akai here:

Thank You for contacting the Akai Customer Care Website
and asking for a warranty extension. A warranty extension is usually cheaper than a single repair and will cover your product for one extra year.

DVD/TV combies are known to go wrong, once one thing goes the other is not far behind and then they die a death like you decribed.
It will cost you more money to have this combie repaired than what it would to but a new one.
I do not recomend any combination of TV/DVD because they are thwart with problems

hope this helps

If the TV fails to power ON, in about 90% of the time is due to a defective power supply.

I had the same problem when I accidently hit the remote. If you are hooked up to cable make sure INPUT is on the correct setting -- AV, S-Video, YPbPr1, YPbPr2, VGA, HDMI1, HDMI2, ATV & DTV (see button on TV or remote). Hope this solves your problem.

LCD TV/DVD Combo image washout

Instead of reloading the DVD multiple times, when the set is doing this try jaring it with the palm of your hand on a corner near where the DVD goes in. If it clears up when you tap it, maybe you just have a bad connection inside that needs repairing.
