Replacement motherboard

The Aspire x1800 motherboard is Micro-ATX, so you will be able to replace it with a Micro-ATX motherboard compatible with your lga 775 cpu and ddr2 ram. Here's an example relitively inexpensive motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157359 .
Also make sure you use thermal paste (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186020) when reapplying your cpu cooler. Here is a short article describing how to do that: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/howtos/howto_install_cpu_and_apply_thermal_paste

Can a Dell F5949 be replaced with any brand motherboard?

Micro-ATX motherboard to fit your Dell would be difficult to find.
If you find a micro motherboard, check the motherboard mounting holes line up with the Dell's mountng plate.

I have to know the coolest motherboard, the high tech kind of motherboard and its function.

You dont say what size format, Full ATX, Mini ATX, Micro ATX.
Intel or AMD.
Most High end motherboards costing over £200 look very cool and exotic.
Have a little search on google, Custom PC has some nice reviews http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/motherboards/

My motherboard (an old one) has gone kaput!. It's an Asus P3V 4X. Can I buy a replacement which will fit into my existing casing? My current processor is an Intel Pentium 3.

Yes. That motherboard is a standard size called ATX. Any other ATX or micro-ATX motherboard will fit into your current case.
