Question about Philips 27PT8419 27" TV

Open Question

The picture is stretched horizontally loosing about 30% of the image area.

I assume my 29PT8419 is just a larger variant of the 27PT8419. Problem: The picture is stretched horizontally loosing about 30% of the image area. When text scrolls on screen bottom to top it looks concave, sucked in towards the center. Trimmers at the back only allowed vertical size and position adjustment. I did not find any but the above two. Also, when forced to 16:9 mode, the image is slightly rotated clockwise. Please advise.

Does's the set have a repair history? If it was previously serviced , the capacitor which is connected between the emitter and the collector of the horizontal output transistor transistor might have been changed with the wrong value, which would cause and overscan situation. The service menu for this set is even hard for technicians to use. It' my opinion if the service manual will not correct the horizontal width, the wrong capacitor was probably installed. Scrivitron (also these sets are known for the forementioned capacitor to short , flame or open.

SOURCE: Picture slants right to left

Hope you have fixed this problem by now, if that tv is unserviced, I mean if nobody has ever opened it, it could be a problem with the positioning of your tv, just tilt the tv in different positions and find out the position in which it will show the right fit. If it is serviced, especially yoke is changed, this is rare, it could be because the position of yoke is not aligned properly.

Typical symptom of a faulty screen voltage capacitor. You'd need a schematic to locate the cap and then change it out.

Trapezoid picture

Keep in mind I do not know how much skill or knowledge you have about TV sets:

One of a few areas---This is a crt or picture tube model----The deflection yoke on the picture tube is number one suspect---if it is bonded to the crt you are done----not replaceable without buying the tube/yoke combination.

Only other area is the Pincussion circuit which should consist mainly of some caps for width and horizontal geometry.

A faint other cause can be indicated if you see a wave MOVING up or down in whatever picture you have= indicates the INPUT filter cap in the main power supply has opened or come loose from the board.

The wave is a 60 cycle indication of AC getting past the power supply and will cause a wave and could be mistook for a trapezoid issue.

Easy to spot the cap as it is larger than any other in the set.

How do I change it from wide screen to regular? I have a black area above and below the picture.

You can set the picture size by remote control itself.

You can vide 480i format programmes in three picture sizes. 4:3, 16:9, and ZOOM
You can change the picture size by pressing the PICTURE SIZE button on the remote control.
4:3 Picutre size
To fill the screen, the top and bottom edges are extedted more widely, although the center of the picture remains near the former ratio.
If receiving a 4:3 programme, the image size is displayed in its originally formatted proportion.
16:9 picure size
This image displays the size of standard 16:9 with black bars at the top and bottom.
If receiving a 4:3 programme, the image is displayed with black bars at the top and bottom and stretched wider.

NOTE: If a fixed bar remains on the screen for a long period of time, the image can become parmanantly engrained in the screen and cause subtle but permanent ghost images. Never leave your TV for long periods of time while it is displaying these images.

Zoom picture size [for 16:9 formats]
The entire picture is uniformly enlarged --it is stretched the same amount both wider and taller (retains its original proportion). The right and left edges of the picture may be hidden.

Picture larger than screen...

If you go to 4:3 mode and the picture is still cutoff then i would assume the tv has a problem with the horizontal or the pinchusion correction circuit . This would be the only two areas that would cause this problem . Check the format section of your menu to make sure it is not in zoom mode or otherwise if it is not then you have a problem with one of two above mentioned circuit problems . Good luck
