I've got same thing with Ricoh AP3850c. Resolves by replace toner cartridges.

My advice on the color problem is the actual brother cartridges are the only ones that work best. anything else causes problems. if in useing a refill kit so dont use anything but Brother cartridges.

Another possibility for a refilled cartridge is that the wrong color ink was put in the wrong section of the cartridge. Just replace the cartridge with a new HP cartridge, if the problem goes away you know the problem was a defective cartridge. FYI when I buy refilled cartridges I always keep a new spare just in case. Refilling ink jet (or toner) cartridges requires skill and experience and not all refillers have it. If you buy refilled cartridges you will on occasions get a bad, keeping a new spare around ensures you wont run out of ink when you really need to print.

I am assuming from your brief problem description that you are getting bad colors when you changed your color cartridge. Are you using a new and certified HP ink cartridge? Are you doing a refill of your old ink cartridge or have bought one of those "re-manufactured" cartridges? The head in the cartridge is very sensitive - when they are damaged or poorly handled - it could result in cross contamination of the color inks. Hence - the brownish color you see could be the result of that cross-contam. My impression is that the remanufactured or older or continously refilled cartridges may be more prone to getting damaged - maybe bec of inherent wear out. Hope this helps.
