The problem is the ice maker, the modular head of the ice maker has broken, hence the clicking sound and the raised arm stuck up. You will need to have an accurate model number and contact a local parts distributor for a new ice maker. It is a simple repair usually only 2-3 screws.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Ice Maker Won't release ice

Jetguy77,

I have a 1993 year (16 years old now) Whirlpool side-by-side with icemaker, Model ED22PW. I have had similar problems with the icemaker - water goes in, freezes, but ice does not eject from tray. It has happened to this unit 2 times since 1993. It turns out the problem is not the thermostat. It is the icemaker motor module. The icemaker has a small synchronous (clock) motor that rotates the ice ejector. When it goes bad, the ejector does not rotate, either because the module timer had failed or the motor itself has failed. The solution is to go to your nearest applinace parts dealer and by a new "icemaker motor module" for Whirlpool Model (your model here). Mine cost $58.85 the last time I replaced it in 2006. To install the new module, you will need to remove the icemaker from the refrigerator. Mine has 3 screws that attach it to the side. Also unplug the power & control cable. The water tube slides out when you pull the unit forward. When you get it out, it is then easy to remove the motor module and insert the new one. You may have to reset the timer on the module to get the tray to fill completely.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Gold Side by Side Ice maker not making ice.

Is the freezer cold enough? Should be close to 10 degrees.
Is there water or ice in the ice mold? If not put water in it and see if it dumps the ice after it’s frozen. If there is ice, lift the cut off arm and let it drop to see if it will start.
If it does dump the ice but don’t refill with water.
Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.

The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.

SOURCE: My Whirlpool refrigerator Model # ED5RHEXNL00 Ice maker broken

Hello. Thanks for choosing fixya! The most common cause for your problem is that someone accidentally raised the wire in the icemaker area that turns it off. Check that first if the wire is up, push it down and within a few hours you will have new ice. The second most common problem is that the cubes in the mold got stuck in there. the fix is to use a blow dryer to free them up, then dry out the mold and spray some PAM cooking spray in to the mold to lubricate it. The final possibliity is that there is ice in the water supply line that feeds your ice maker. Once again get out the blow dryer and thaw that ice so that the water flows once again. good luck with it. regards, joe

Ice machine stays in harvest too long what's the problem

when in ice realese mode then the former plate heats for a few seconds the the ice will fall off easily i think if it stays too long in release its not detecting the heating cycle as start or finished or some end stop is wrong or the micro switch is intermittent so when it begins to release the switch is making the cycle short in time of event so ... it gets stuck check the usually three micro switches by replacement and all connections and give it a good clean also check the sensors {easy with some ice and water and a meter set to ohms}

Ice maker will only cycle once then it goes to off position . It stop working due to ice build up in supply tube. I removed the ice maker and ran hot water over unit to clear out the ice that was lodged in...

That bar your talking about goes to the full up position just before the end of the harvest cycle then falls right at the end of the cycle. But on a good day it barely drops. Characteristic of that ice maker.
If you ran water over the ice maker try these 2 things.
1. Remove the ice maker and leave it on the counter for about 2 days to completely dry out. Then re-install and try again.
2. If no luck, hang a small weight to the middle of the wire to see if it will drop on it's own.
3. If no luck, you'll have to replace the ice maker. However,
if your commited to buying a new ice maker, first snap off the front cover and look for interference where the wire goes into the ice maker. You can actually remove the whole solid state front end by removing the 3 screws that hold it on and make a more detailed check.
P.S. pull the wire out of the ice maker before this last step. It simply pulls out.

Ice maker will not stop sending ice out of door

If your refrigerator has a wire bar that raises and lowers as ice cubes are ejected. Make sure the bar is not trapped or frozen in the down position. This will cause the ice maker to continuously make ice.
Usually pulling the wire bar all the way up the ice maker will stop.

If not, you may have a bad switch and will need this replaced.
Good luck!

Icemaker stopped making ice

remove the front plastic cover on the icemaker and you will see a bunch of little holes make a jumper wire out #10 or 12 house wire strip about 1/4 inch off the ends an insert in the holes marked t&h this will start a test cycle make sure you hold the plastic insulation so you don't get bit if the ice maker starts cycling remove the wire and watch for it to stop listen for the icemaker valve to open if the ice maker finishes and the valve didn’t fill replace the water valves if the icemaker doesnt cycle and you may have to kind of twist the jumper back and forth to get it to make contact depending on the gauge you used then replace the ice maker motor module if you hear the valve open and the ice maker doesnt fill check for a frozen ice fill tube that should do it

Ice maker stopped working

I have the same problem with my whirlpool every once in a while, and I found out that if I run a hot air dryer at the back of the fridge where the water tube comes in and along the ice maker it loosens everything up. I think that for some reason the water freezes in the tube somehow and prevents a full cycle. When I am using the hair dryer i can feel the frozen ice come sliding out of the tube. Also I know when I am getting close to thawing everything out when the ice maker runs through a cycle while I am blowing the hot air on it. Good luck.

Whirlpool side by side icemaker won't stop... lol

no you shouldnt have to replace the ice maker, the stop arm probably is not in place. pull the ice maker out and check where the arm goes into the motor head. I think that will solve it for you. Good Luck.
