My GE spacemaker microwave won't heat and makes an unusual sound

My GE spacemaker microwave xl 1800 all of a sudden just started making an unusual loud noise and won't heat anything. We also noticed an electrical burning smell. Can't be good, but maybe someone has experienced something similar that was fixable at a reasonable cost.

I have nearly the same problem. The microwave intermittently makes a loud humming noise and once I smelled electrical burning. My microwave happens to still heat items, however. When an appliance technician came out to look at the microwave it would not make the noise and it still heated items, so he left stating he could not find a problem. Anyways, I'm concerned there could be a safety issue in my microwave and I don't know what to do now.

I have the same problem on my oven- model JVM1640WB and called an appliance repairman who is honest and reliable (I've used him before). He said the problem is with the electrode, to fix it is roughly $300. He recommended buying a new microwave rather than fixing it.

I agree! Microwave have come down on prices. Sometimes a repair can cost more than buying a new one. Parts and Labor are rather expensive!

It sounds like the main transformer has failed. It would be cheaper to replace the whole microwave than repair this one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Wont heat food

It could be that the "grinding" noise was actually "arcing" taking place inside the cavity or uder the cover. The magnatron is possibly damaged or the h.v. diode. Should be repaired by qualified repairman

GE Spacesaver 1800 XL - rattling sound

Hi jnflanders,
You've probably solved this by now, but I'll answer just in case. That part is called the stirrer motor. You can replace it yourself, as long as you have an offset phillip's head screwdriver handy.
Before you order the replacement part, figure out if your stirrer is driven by a d-shaped or a square shaft. You can tell by taking off the round plate on the inside top wall of the microwave. GE makes stirrer motors for both d-shaped and square shafts, so you'll have to get the right one. Here's the d-shaped motor that fixed this problem with my microwave: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=2024961.
Good luck!
