Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

DELL inspiron 6400 laptop screen turned black

After I switched on my laptop, nothig showed up on its screen. When I connected the laptop to an external monitor, it worked fine. It seems there is no power supply to the monitor, I'm not sure though.
How do I know whether the LCD is bad or the inverter?
Kindly advise.

    thanks for replying.

I already tried the fn+f8 thing, it didnt work. Looks like its the inverter prob. In that case, do I need to replace the inverter or just the coil can be replaced?

Any suggestions, where to get a used inverter for the LCD screen?

I have already opened up the screen and the inverter. I'm now looking for a replacement inverter to check the screen.

    thanks again!

This sounds like a classic case of inverter problems, it could be just inverter coil thats gone which is an inexpensive repair, if it is the inverter then its a bit more.
try the Fn the F key that shows two tv screen icons, it may just have switched to external mode by accident

good luck

the best thing is to have a look around a choose a reputable PC repair store, they will be able to tell you if its the coil or the inverter itself and how much it will cost to repair.
If you don't mind having a go at it yourself you have to take the laptop appart to be able to remove the lid and disconnect the monitor plug and wireless wires, then you have unscrew the bezel ( the front plasic cover ) to reveal the the inverter, its an elongated circuit board, the coil is also on this board and its this board that has to be repaced, you can have a look online for the right inverter by laptop make and model.
I you do decide to do this yourself you will encounter losts of screws! make a small diagram or note about where these screws came from

    good luck

I have replaced my dell inspiron 6400 screen cover. Now my wifi connection does not work. I am getting a message "no wifi networks found". Manual diagnostics tool shows "scan test"...

1st : check if the wireless capability of your notebook is enabled. There might be a switch or button that needs to be pressed to enable the wireless capabilty of your notebook.

2nd : check the device manager if the wireless network card is listed with no question mark or exclamation point. if it has, then reinstall the driver.

3nd or the wireless card might loosen.. at the bottom of your notebook, you will find several screws there. look for a small box usually with 2 screws. Open that up and you should see a black and white cable connected to a small card. Ensure those 2 cables are connected. Ensure that the laptop is powered off when you do this. Then try it again.

Hope that works.

Sounds like a bad drive but it may still have the data on it (hand it over to a professional).
Next time, don't forget to do your backups so you don't have to worry.

This is a no boot issue. Youre saying that you can perfectly run the PSA diagnostics but doesnt load Windows rather it stays on black screen, meaning the boot loader of Windows failed to load. You need to reinstall windows on your computer
