Question about Toshiba RD-XS52 DVD Recorder

Open Question

Toshiba RD-XS55-S-TU corruption of video after firmware update

This recorder is around 2 years old and was functioning fine. Occasionally I'd have a problem with corrupt pixels when copying from DVD-RAM to the HDD (never from DVD-R for some reason). I complained several times to Toshiba and they claimed since I am in Japan it is due to the Hz issue (50 Hz versus 60 Hz). I do use a transformer to provide 120 volts. However pulling the plug for 3+ minutes usually solves the problem.

I upgraded to the latest firmware hoping it would solve these issues. At the termination of the update, the last couple of steps of the instructions did not occur (similar to another poster complaining of this problem). I pressed the standby switch for 10+ seconds but I did not get a 'Wait' message nor did the tray close automatically. I had to pull the plug to gain access to the recorder. The recorder starts up fine, except I have a chronic problem with corrupt pixels now whenever I dub from DVD-RAM to HDD. I have tried pulling the plug for hours and as long as a day, but no help. I also have problems with the recorder locking up during scheduled recordings: I turn on the TV and the image is locked in mid recording and none of the buttons on the recorder works to turn it off so I have to pull the plug. Of course I lose the recording and all scheduled recordings after that. Sometimes the audio would just plain fail.

Toshiba wants me to send the unit in for repair at a cost of $150 but freight by U.S. Postal Service from my FPO AP address to the U.S. will run $40! I told them why should I pay for repair when it was caused by their firmware update??? I notice they have subsequently pulled the firmware file from their site, no doubt due to my complaints.

Any suggestions on how to fix the recorder and/or get Toshiba to repair it at no charge, which I feel is a fair demand? I have already tried to format the HDD several times (using the Toshiba instructions via the recorder) and tried the firmware update again 3X to no avail. I even tried to use the Canadian firmware update for this unit but the recorder won't recognize it.

SOURCE: Toshiba DVR recorder incorrect disk message

You could try the factory initializing process I found on another webesite (AVS Forums): "Had this message pop up a few weeks ago. Tried the solutions in the manual, no go. Tried unplugging it for 7 days, no go. Called Toshiba customer service @1-800-631-3811, the tech told me: 1) turn on TV and set to receive your DVD signal 2) Turn on DVD player and remove any discs 3) put Dvd / VCR selector on DVD 4) at the same time, push channel selector button UP (^) along with the PLAY button 5) hold the buttons down until TV screen shows "Initializing" message, release buttons, let DVD player go thru it's reset cycle and shut down 6) turn DVD player on and watch your DVD movies now Works like a charm. Put this in your manual for the next time." My unit has not worked since December of last year, I only had it for one year and it conveniently stopped working right after the one year warranty. My unit was not functioning whatsoever past turning it on, but when I did the factory initialization I was able to operate my unit again....UNFORTUNATELY, it still does not read disks, I still get the "Incorrect Disk" message. I guess I could consider it progress. But still try it, it may work for you. My unit just seems to be fried beyond repair. If anyone has any suggestions on how to correct the incorrect disk problem, I would be greatly appreciative. I'm not ready to throw mine away yet!

If it was a toshiba supplied disk, then I should follow up with them with the failure, as it was their fix, that caused this problem, they should replace/repair this unit for you

When done the machine turns off automatically, and you turn it onagain. Every time mine has stopped working this has fixed it. This might work with yours as well.

SOURCE: DVD - Video Finalization rejection

1. The message can appear if the disc has already been finalised.

2. The disc may be faulty.

3. Try copying again from HDD to another disc. Performing a copy and finalise together by using 'DVD Video Creation' from the Edit menu can be more successful than doing each step separately.

4. When you transferred from your video camera, did you use firewire? If so, did you record at the maximum (default) bitrate of 14+ ? If so, you must copy (rate conversion) to the DVD at a maximum bitrate of 9.2, which is the maximum for the DVD playback standard.

SOURCE: HDD Corrupt

I have the XS35 and the HDD drive is curropt. Can I do the following?

1. Download the Toshiba firmware update:
http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/customersupport/model_firmware.asp?model=rd-xs34

2. Burn the ISO to a CD-R disc. ImgBurn is an excellent free burner for this.
http://www.imgburn.com/

3. Insert the CD in your unit. It will auto-install the firmware. Follow onscreen instructions. Takes about 10 minutes total.

After the update, my existing HDD shows are playable again, and I can record and playback from the HDD. I bet it would be a good idea to periodically backup your shows on DVDs, and regularly reformat the HDD.

Every time I try to use the remote on my Toshiba RD-XS32SU Video Recorder I get the following code displayed on the unit: DR-OFF I do not know what it means and how to resolve the problem.

It is confusing to many people this function, but not impossible to investigate (perhaps experiment with some of the functions). You can get a copy of the INSTALLATION GUIDE (if you don't have a copy for any reason) from the following:

http://tacpservice.toshiba.com/consumerproductsupport/Manuals/dvr/RD-XS32SU_Inst_E.pdf

and if you don't have a copy of the original OWNER'S MANUAL, you can also download that from the following:

http://tacpservice.toshiba.com/consumerproductsupport/Manuals/dvr/rd-xs32_om_e.pdf

(copy and paste into your browser if required - these are both FREE documents)

(Page 48 of the installation guide (not the owner's manual) tells you about IR CODE setup option using remote - read that first if you like, then try your recorder).

Hopefully this helps you a tiny bit.

I need an owner's manual for a Toshiba DVR Model RD-XS55KU. Where can I find it

First of all, here is the main information page for your model:

http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/models/rd-xs55/docs/rd-xs55_spec.pdf

And here is the MAIN SUPPORT AND DOWNLOAD page:

http://tacpservice.toshiba.com/consumerproductsupport/Manuals/dvdr.asp

And here is a direct link to the ONLINE USER'S MANUAL for that model:

http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/models/RD-XS55/docs/rd-xs55_om_e.pdf

To view the Support Page or the Owner's Manual with Operating Instructions just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated or the contents of the Owner's Manual.

You may need ADOBE READER installed on your computer to read PDF documents.
You can download this free at WWW.ADOBE.COM if necessary.
Click on the DOWNLOAD ADOBE READER button on right side of the ADOBE home page when you get there.

Please comment back here to this page if you have any questions, have difficulty accessing the links, or just require further general assistance and I will respond as soon as I see it.

If this was at all helpful please click on the 4 Thumbs Up helpfulness rating icon you see on this page.

DVD unit says, disc is empty, with all DVDs inserted. DVDs are correct region and correct type, and they playback fine in other DVD units. I have already reset the unit per the Toshiba tech support site. I...

First, insert the DVD into the recorder.
Then, try double-click on OPEN/CLOSE button on the remote control. You have to make it very quick - two quick clicks on the same button. If done correctly, you will first see OPEN, then CLOSE in the right corner of the screen.
When done successfully, the unit will recognize the DVD again (if the burner has not failed totally.)

I tried that with RD-XS55 (it has the same DVD-RAM drive as RD-XS35.) It is not perfect solution, but it might help temporarily. In my situation, it bring my dvd drive back to "life," so I do not need to do double-click all the time.

Let's face it, your burner is dying whether you like it or not. And new replacement would cost you around $200.

Hi, I have a toshiba RD-XS52 that requires a firmware update before HDMI will work with newer model TV. Have tried to download and run update link provided by tosiba with 10 pouched discs. Any thoughts?

I tried the firmware found on Toshiba Canada website, it doesn't work. I believe the US version of RD-XS52 firmware is not upgradeable. The site said the firmware is for RD-XS52SC. You guys got it to work?

I updated my firmware from 1413 to 1416 found on avforums. This is for european units. I suggest you also complain to Toshiba Japan as there are known issues with the xs32. We all need a firmware update. See AVforums.

My unit will not recognise RAM discs anymore - even those that I had previously used.

Have you thought of replacing the DVD drive. See AVforums.
