The battery compartment is on the bottom of the camera. Put a coin into the slot of the circular cover and unscrew it to open. The camera uses two LR44 alkalines or SR44 silver batteries or equivalent.
If you need a manual, you may download a copy from here.
I don't know about a used one, but you can order a new battery cover for about 7USD from
The camera uses two 1.5V alkaline LR44 batteries or two silver-oxide SR44 batteries. You can get two alkalines for about 5USD at http://www.batteriesplus.com/product_search/25699-Energizer-1-dot5V-Alkaline-Camera-battery-DASH--DASH-EVRA76BP.aspx A source for the silver-oxide batteries is http://www.batteriesplus.com/product_search/46095-357-Silver-Oxide-1-dot5V-Watch-Battery-SMC357.aspx
It may be that the batteries that came with the camera are dead. Double check the way you have them installed, both cells should have the positive side up as they sit in the cap. It is best to handle button cell batteries on the round edges rather than the flat sides. The battery cap for your camera should have open slots on the sides so you can place the batteries in using those openings
this camera has at least two different names that i know of (phoenix, vivitar ) .The battery covers are the same.
most camera repair shops have repair manuals with part numbers from the manufacturer. the only other way is to take a cover to a machine shop and have them make some from aluminum. we had this done for the pentax spotmatic when parts were no longer available.
