Look on your function keys there could be a radio tower symbol. If you have one press and hold the FN button ( left side on the bottom of keyboard ) and then press the button with the tower on it that should turn on / off your wireless. you may also have a switch on the sides or front which maybe turned off also check for that.

SOURCE: connecting to wireless network

Not sure what kind of laptop you have, but on some models check to make sure that the actual physical "switch" is turned on. Usually located in the front or side of the laptop. Sometimes there is a little wireless logo located above the keyboard somewhere. And other times its set as a "function" key. If you see a wireless logo on a F-key (say for example F5), press and HOLD the FN key (FN stands for function, usually located on the lower left of the keyboard) and the corresponding F-key. Hope this helps!

SOURCE: HP wireless problem

When you look at the properties for your wireless adapeter, does it say enabled?
On most laptops you'll have a key that has Fn on it. This is your function key. Hold it down, and look for a key that has what looks like a little radio transmission tower on it. Press that key (while holding the Fn key), and see if you get a pop up stating that your wireless is enabled or disabled (usually it pops up with the no symbol through it).
Try this a couple of times, with a few minutes inbetween to see if you can get it to reenable again.

SOURCE: Cant connect to my wireless network anymore???

NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller drivers may have messed up your network drivers , since your network card is broadcom or intel pro, and it is not there.

Try reinstalling the wireless lan drivers.

You can download the wireless network card driver from link below:

Select software and drivers

In there you find different wireless drivers, download and install them all, the computer will automatically chose the correct ones.

You will have to enter your wireless network key again after reinstalling drivers.

Slow connection low signal

If a wireless network has low signal strength, the transfer of information across the network could be slow or you might not be able to access certain parts of the network. Here are solutions to some common problems with low wireless signal strength: • Your computer is too far from the wireless router or access point. Move your computer closer to the router or access point. If your computer is portable, try moving it around to determine the range of the wireless signal and the best place to use the computer. If you can't get closer to the router or access point, consider buying and installing an external antenna for your wireless network adapter. Many wireless network adapters are set up so that you can attach an external antenna to them, which provides better reception than the built-in antenna. Check the information that came with your wireless network adapter to see if you can install an additional antenna. • The wireless router or access point is turned off or isn't working properly. There are two things to try: o Make sure the router or access point is turned on and that the wireless signal light is illuminated. o Reset the router or access point by turning it off, waiting at least 10 seconds, and then turning it back on. If you don't own the access point or don't manage the network, contact the network administrator. • There is interference from other devices. If you have 802.11b or 802.11g network hardware, it uses the 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) frequency. Other devices that use this frequency include microwave ovens and cordless phones. If you have 802.11a network hardware, it uses the 5 GHz frequency. Some cordless phones also use this frequency. These devices can cause interference between your computer and the network. There are two things you can try in this situation: o If any devices like these are near your computer, turn them off temporarily or move them farther away. o Change the router or access point settings to use a different wireless channel, or set the channel to be selected automatically if it's set to a fixed channel number. Sometimes one wireless channel is clearer than others. In the United States and Canada, you can use channels 1, 6, and 11. Check the information that came with your access point or router for instructions about setting the wireless signal channel. • The network you're looking for is set to not broadcast its network name (SSID). Wireless routers and access points can be set up so that they don't broadcast the network name. In this case, you can't detect that the network is in range (in order to connect to it) unless you've previously connected to the network or you manually connect to the network using the service set identifier (SSID). To connect to a network that's not broadcasting, follow these steps: 1. Open Connect to a Network by clicking the network icon ( or ) in the notification area. 2. Click Unnamed Network, and then type the network information. The network will be added to your list of networks and will be available to connect to in the future when your computer is in range of the network.

Cisco access point

Hi,
How to configure wireless access point using a laptop
Wireless technology makes connecting to the Internet possible from anywhere within the range of the network. Unfortunately, not all Internet-capable devices have wireless technology, and many still require an Ethernet port connection. If you have a laptop with a wireless card and an Internet connection, you can make the laptop a wireless access point and share that connection with other devices, whether your laptop runs a Windows or OSX operating system. Windows computers allow other devices to access the wireless network via a physical connection to the laptop, while OSX computers allow AirPort equipped devices to connect as well, creating a second wireless bubble for the network.

Instruction:
WINDOWS
1 Turn on the laptop and the device with which you will share the connection. Ensure the laptop's wireless card is turned on and you have an Internet connection.

2 Connect an Ethernet cord to the port on the laptop, and the other end to the receiving device. You need to make the connection first, or you will not be able to access the sharing options for the connection.

3 Open the list of network connections on the computer. In Windows 7 and Vista, access this list by typing "Network Connections" into the Start menu search bar and pressing "Enter." In Windows XP, click on "Network Connections" in the Network and Sharing Center section of the Control Panel.

4 Right click on the wireless connection and select "Properties," then navigate to the Sharing tab. This tab will not appear unless both devices are connected.

5 Check the box marked "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection." Click "OK" to save the changes.
OSX
1 Click on the Apple menu and select "System Preferences." Click the "Sharing" option, then choose "Internet Sharing."

2 Select the Airport and wireless network in the "Share your connection from:" drop-down menu.

3
Select an output format for the connection in the "To computers using:" drop-down menu. Choose "Ethernet" for a physical connection or "AirPort" for wireless broadcasting.

4
Turn on the device you wish to receive the connection. Connect the devices with an Ethernet cable, or turn on the receiving device's AirPort card and connect wirelessly.

Is there a manual shut off switch to disable the wireless search mode on an Acer laptop?

I assume you want to stop vista from automatically connecting to wireless networks other than yours.......try this:

Open Network and Sharing Center, click Manage wireless networks, click on your "home" network & make sure that Connect automatically when this network is in range is checked. Now do the same for any other connection that is listed but uncheck the Connect automatically when this network is in range.

Go to Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center
click Manage network connections under 'Tasks'
Right-click Wireless Network Connection
Select Properties.
In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialogue box, click the
Wireless Networks tab.
Select other wireless network like "Y5ZONE", "PCCW" and click Properties
Click Connection tab
Uncheck the box "Connect when this network is in range"

Hope this helps.....
