It's probably either WinXP and a hub fighting over drive IDs, special drivers you installed but haven't been upgrading, or the thing isn't powered up properly.  Go to.  Oh, and your CPU (Intel, ARM, AMD, whatever) never recognizes hard drives; it's up to the OS.  What OS?  That's how you present a problem properly, in the right category.

check to make sure the drive is formatted to the FAT file system as NTFS file system is not recognised on Macs (check the drive on a PC and have the PC format the drive to the FAT file system)

I have a Maxtor One-Touch III 750GB External Drive that has worked well for over a year. This past weekend the icon disappeared from my desktop and I can't get it back. I'm running a MaxOS X 10.5.5 OS...

mine will also occasionally disappear. i have had to do a restart of the pc which gets it back for my 160 gb firewire external.
the blinking light may be indicative of the hdd going bad, though.

I believe that my maxtor external hard drive may have gotten password locked, it shows in my hardware properties, but won't reconize in windows.

it could also be a hardware issue.... i make alot of money from recovering data off maxtor drives that are not recognized by the bios or in windows.

I have a Maxtor 750GB Hard drive. I have connected it to my computer and gone into My computer where I right clicked on it but when I have gone into Format it won't let me change it. I want it formatting...

Go to the seagate website (they bought maxtor) and download the windows version of maxblast. That is if you are using that as a spare. bootable cd rom version if it's not.

Maxtor III 500 GB external hard drive is no longer recognized by computer. No driver installed ???

Drivers are not necessary for hard drives - as long as your computer recognized it when you first installed it, you're all set. It sounds like your hard drive has failed, or become disconnected. Check the connections for IDE or SATA, and power. If they're both connected properly, listen when you power up the computer to hear if that particular hard drive spins up. If it doesn't, it might be dead.
If you have access to another computer, try installing the drive into it temporarily and see if it is recognized in that computer. If the drive has failed, you might be able to get it replaced by Maxtor if it's still under warranty. Unfortunately they will not recover any data on the drive for you; you must pay a data recovery specialist to recover any data on the drive, and this is expensive, so only do this if it's extremely important data.

Macintosh format. Each time i boot up, the computer does not recognize the maxtor that has been working fine for months. firewire 250gb. i tried disk utility to repair and / or verify and errors come...

It sounds like your external hard drive went belly up unfortunately. Unless you backed up your files to another location (remember, backing up means having your files on 2 or more locations, not just "keeping them" on an external drive).

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Maxtor basics external drive

Hi Nuisance101, I recall your running vista. Vista is a nightmare. If you cound only see the troubles we see on a daily basis here at FixYa you'ed understand. It's a common problem with Vista not seeing USB devices, externial devices. It does & then the next second it doesn't. Same for all external devices. I'm am 100% sure the trouble is not your system or your devices. It's Vista. I have gone over dozens of post from vista users. One would think MS has been on vacation since the release of vista. You can look at vista's web site for help for a possible fix, at this link. (I have no faith). MS blames driver software. Your Maxtor drive is external. Henve no driver software.
So it falls into that vista area of one time vista see's the drive & the next it does not.
Either way I though Maxtor addressed vista issues. I prefer Seagate drives myself. Personally know lots of people who's Maxtor's drives have just gone down for no reason. Seagate bought Maxtor.

Most of the post from vista users, claim users should check vista's updates often. Since Max Blaster did its job, I'm inclined to blame vista.

I wish I could give you a better fix or suggestion but I'm up against vista. That's why I run WinXP Pro. I do not have these problems.

Best wishes Nuisance101!
Mike
