Won't read(or burn) blank cd. have reinstalled itunes and followed some other suggestions. still no result.
Is your cd drive listed as a device in My Computer? Click Start/My Computer and see if the CD Drive is listed along with the hard drives. If not that's your problem. To solve it you can remove the power cord, remove the battery, turn the laptop over and remove the one screw on the bottom that holds the cd drive then pull the drive out and put it back in (this is called reseating). Boot the laptop and see if the drive is now listed in My Computer.
If the drive is not listed then you will need to remove Upper and Lower Filters.

If after all this the drive still does not recognize or will not burn a cd you should try using Windows Media Player to burn something. Also If you had something like Nero as a burner software to burn, try using it.

The Dell Inspiron 531 is a desktop personal computer with a Microsoft Windows operating system. An Inspiron equipped with a CD burner can be used to record audio discs using Windows Media Player, which comes installed on the Inspiron as a standard part of the software package Dell loads onto its computers. Blank, recordable discs and pre-recorded audio CDs are the only supplies needed for the project.
