Is your cd drive listed as a device in My Computer? Click Start/My Computer and see if the CD Drive is listed along with the hard drives. If not that's your problem. To solve it you can remove the power cord, remove the battery, turn the laptop over and remove the one screw on the bottom that holds the cd drive then pull the drive out and put it back in (this is called reseating). Boot the laptop and see if the drive is now listed in My Computer.

If the drive is not listed then you will need to remove Upper and Lower Filters.
Windows 7

Are you able to read CD's and DVD's using the Optical Drive ?If yes, then it may be a problem with the lens in the drive. It can also be an issue with the software that you are using to burn Cd's ( like Nero ).If you are not able to Read and write Cd's or DVD's and the Optical drive isnot listed in " My Computer" then it can be either a driver issue or registry filters issue.Let me know abt this

Cd burning error

If possible, use a second CD player/burner to burn a CD. If can't borrow one, either internal or external (USB), they are fairly cheap second hand. I suspect your CD player has become defective, maybe only in burn mode. Can you burn anything (eg, software) using this item ? ie is it only iTunes that's affected ?

I have the hp inspiron 531s.Can i burn cd or dvd??

Yes your computer has a DVD writer... It should have the software to burn DVDs and CDs

The Dell Inspiron 531 is a desktop personal computer with a Microsoft Windows operating system. An Inspiron equipped with a CD burner can be used to record audio discs using Windows Media Player, which comes installed on the Inspiron as a standard part of the software package Dell loads onto its computers. Blank, recordable discs and pre-recorded audio CDs are the only supplies needed for the project.

I just re-installed the latest version of iTunes 10.3 hoping it would fix the error box that says the Registry for burning CD's isn't working..Recording Disc software not working, etc. It still...

Hello,
You probably have a problem with your gear driver software and your chipset. This is a lengthy thing to fix but if you want to brave it, goto this link 3 Removing GEAR Drivers. Follow the section for your OS be it Vista 32/64 or Win 7 32/64.
Once you remove the gear drivers reboot your system and try itunes. Note: You may have to reinstall the latest version after doing this.
I stress... make sure you follow the gear removal instructions exactly as it requires editing the registry and removing some system files. If you edit the wrong registry entry or delete the wrong system file you may cause your system to not boot correctly.
This is a bit in-depth but its faster then what most people do in this situation... which is to reinstall windows :) I try not to recommend that! :)
Cheers Chris
