Re: whirlpool top loading washer doesn't agitate
The agitator dogs only make the top part of the agitator work. you can check the dogs by grabbing the top of the agitator and turning it right then left. If it doesnt lock when turned back the other direction they are bad. If thats not it, it could be your drive coupler. But its only the drive coupler if it doesnt spin. Also check the lid switch. But if its the lid switch Your washer will stay full of water and not drain out. But check your dogs. There are cheap and thats probably your problem.

this is for the whirlpool washer,if you grab the top of the agitator can you spin it both ways without it grabbing,it should only spin one way,if you can spin it both ways you have bad dogs, the agitator cam kit part number is 285809 and it's around 13 dollars.pop off the center cap of the agitator, remove the 7 1/6 inch screw in the middle and pull off the top of the agitator to get at the dogs, you'll see them there are 4 of them, they waer down and the top of the agitator doesn't work.watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ensJz0h6wLM
Sounds like you might have bad agitator dogs. Remove the agitator cap, theres a 5/16th bolt that needs to be removed then the top of agitator comes off. The dogs are 4 little gears with teeth on them, when they get worn the top half of the agitator doesn't move.
The part you need is FSP# 80040 dog kit goes inside the upper agitator. installing them dawgs: You sit the agitator on the floor, put you feet
on the base and snatch the top portion off of the bottom. You put all
the dogs back in the cam set them up into the upper portion with a
piece of pvc pipe or equivilent and invert onto the base, lining up the
tabs on the bottom with the holes in the upper portion being careful
not to smash the tabs on the base that hold the upper portion onto the
agitator. Snap it all into place and gently re-install it being careful
not to over tighten the nut. Watch this video:
Try leveling the washer... If the washer is level, then don't wrap the clothes around the agitator...drop the clothes straight in, on top of each other evenly around the agitator. The Ensignia washer has a Dual action agitator... That means the clothes roll over them selves, instead of moving side to side, as with a traditional agitator. wrapping the clothes around the agitator will cause the load to be un balanced and then cause the "banging" noise... this should take care of the problem...
Pull the agitator off and check the plastic drive hub at the top of the agitator shaft. It should not be split, or have it's internal splines sheared off. If this all looks ok, then likely transmission problems or a slipping drive belt (motor to transmission). Good luck!
HI, this will happen over a long period of operation time. This is repairable and, you will need to purchase an agitator kit from whirlpool or, an aftermarket circuit. installing a new agitator kit will fix this issue.
one or more of the main agitator components have become stripped or, damaged.
