The laser seems to freeze up the video game i am playing and i am not able to continue the game i am playing at that time.the only time the console does not freeze is when i am playing the demo games provided,or when i am adding music from compact discs.
Someone gave me my xbox 360 because the power brick was bad. it would freeze up and show some kind of checkboard thing on the screen. i told the guy at gamestop about it and he told me to make sure its not on the carpet, same for the power brick. it hasnt froze up since so it saved me 100 dollars.

The XBox 360 is a wonderful video game console, however, with heavy usage, the laser (and/or other components in the drive) will eventually burn out.
The first signs of the laser starting to burn out is that your game will start freezing during game play. Eventually the games will stop reading altogether and you will get an "OPEN TRAY" message when you put a disc in and close the tray. What this means is that the XBox 360 thinks that there is no disc in the system.
If you click into the following U.S. based website, you can find more information about this issue, the parts to fix it yourself and you can also send your XBox 360 to them to have it repaired:
It seems your laser isn't reading the second layer on the games. Regular DVDs have only one layer of information, Xbox 360 games are "Dual Layered" meaning twice as much information in the same area. I would recommend buying a replacement laser from eBay and installing it yourself (as you already know how to take the Xbox apart)
If you are using a HDMI connection, often the connection will be lost between your xbox and your tv. In my case I simply change to another channel or the other HDMI channel and then back and the secure HDMI connection will be restored.
HI, this is an hard drive issue. try taking the hard drive off and, playing a game with it not connected. if the freezing continues, this will confirm an overheating issue that will , eventually, damage the system. try relocating the unit to a cooler section of the home and, purchase a cooling device for the 360 asap.
sounds like ure laser is on the way out has the drive been changed at all?
try cleaning the laser with a cleaning disk if still no joy its a new laser by the sound of it might be cheaper to find a repair shop local than sending it to ms
Hi m8, this is caused by either the laser being faulty and needing cleaning or adjusting OR the machine is overheating and the mainboard is warping which breaks the solder joints.
1: laser: if its the laser you may be able to fix this problem by stripping down the xbox 360 and cleaning the laser with a cotton earbud and a bit of spit (spit on the cotton bud not the laser lol). if this does not help then try adjusting the pots on the laser to around 2.82 there are guides on the net showing you how to do this. i can upload one if you need help.
2: overheating/baod failure: this is more than likely whats happening. you will need to strip down the console and take the mainboard out. take the x-clamps off (both of them) and go over the whole board (paying more attention to the memory and cpu,gpu etc) in a circular motion around 2-3 inches away from the board. let the mainbaoard cool down and then put it all back together. then try again. i guarantee this will probably fix your problem. www.fixmyconsole.co.uk
