When the shredder is in auto mode it will not quit running so I must set on forward setting to make it stop. I called Staples and they recommended that I blow out any paper fibers near the sensor which I have done but it has not resolved the problem.
Cleaning of the paper sensors is essential. Blowing on the center of the paper insert area will clear the paper fibers near the sensor but not all. Since my shredder was way past warranty, I opted to remove the 7 screws on the back of shredder mechanism, gingerly remove the shredding mechanism from its seat and there I found, wedged in between one of the sensors, a solitary paper fiber. That ominous, evil paper fiber was wedged in so tight that even the jet engine blasts from a 747 aircraft would have not dislodged the paper fiber. Making use of a Qtip, I dislodged the paper fiber, cleaned out all remaining paper fibers in and around the inside of the housing, then reassembled the unit. It has worked satisfactorily since then.

Did you open up the shredder or remove it from the basket? Look and see if the switch is in the right place and is not being blocked.
If you didn't mess with the switch and just cleared the jam, then take it back to where you bought it for a replacement
SOURCE: shredder won't stop running
You probably need to clean out some debris from the shredder's sensor. The sensor is usually a small switch that is pushed into the "on" position when a piece of paper goes through. If there is some paper sticking this switch "on", then the shredder will not shut off. You can use a small needle nose pliers, or a tweezer to get the debris out. Make sure to unplug the unit before cleaning!
Hoep that helps, good luck!

Try blowing some canned air into the feed slot to clean the sensors.

Check to see if cutting shafts are turning in either forward or reverse operation. If not and you can hear the motor running the take off cover and check plastic gear drive train...probably something broken in there.
SOURCE: The shredder will work in
Hi,
The problem is that there is an interlock on the unit so that it wont
work if the basket is not attached. Please locate that switch and reseat
it. The ones that I have worked on come loose and the tab that pushes
that switch down does not reach the switch any more.
There is usually a light sensor that detects a blockage when the page is
inserted. IT then tells thee motor to start. Since the motor runs in
reverse without that. The problem is either in the switch that you found
OR the light sensor is loose or bad. IF it was the light itself that
was out then it would run all the time. Hold the reverse button down and
take the unit off the basket. If it stops then the switch on the basket
sensor is okay.
If the sensor is fine, the only other thing that you could do is take the unit apart and see if there is a relay or loose wire in the circuit.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
