I have a ysr50 1987 and it will not shift past 2nd gear. I'm sure it's the shift lever but I'm open to any suggestions before I start taking it apart.

You have a bent shift fork. The repair means taking the engine out of the frame then removing the top end, removing the flywheel and electrics, removing the clutch , shift mechanism and kick starter and a few other parts. THEN you are ready to split the gearbox to remove the gears and crankshaft and then the shift drum and bent shift fork. Next you get to put it all back together. This is a pretty big job for the home mechanic.

You will need an impact driver, flywheel puller, case splitter and torque wrench plus the normal screwdriver, pliers, etc.. Alternate to the special tools is taking it to the dealer and say "Fix it".
I normally tell people to take it to the shop just so they don't get into such an involved project.

SOURCE: Shift lever will not return after shifting gears.

It most likely is the shift return spring.

If the shift pedal shaft does not spring back into position a problem with a spring is indicated. Your bike has two springs tied to shifting. The shaft spring and the index wheel spring. Both springs are still available at Babbitt's. Remove the left case cover and both springs are accessible after removing the clutch. A new gasket is also available.

Get yourself a repair manual and find out what it says, but I think you are correct, the return spring is either broken or it has slipped. Try this site for a freebie manual:

1995 toyota corolla automatic transmission stuck in 2nd gear

You mean the shift lever or handle stuck in 2nd D. ?
If so.
Make sure key is in the ignition and on, (Do Not Start !) and you should be able to shift back and forward.
-No. It's still not work.
-Okay use a spare key to insert into the shift lock hole and you should be able to shift it.

Q: Where is the shift lock hole...?
A: It's either in front or behind the shift lever area. It's look like a key hole.(It fit the car's key)

Shift lever sticks in 2nd. Will not shift past 2nd.

With the engine off, operate it by hand (don't forget to use the clutch handle). Is it physically binding on anything external (has the arm been bent and begun to rub on something)?

I have a 2000 yz125 and when I shift into 3rd gear and give it gas it kicks it back down to 2nd gear. sometimes I cant get it to shift into 2nd gear. any ideas? thanks

I am presuming you are giving the gear lever a positive shifting motion when changing gears.
If the gear lever is completely tight on the gear shift shaft and the toe of the lever does not touch the engine sidecover when changing up, you may have a worn roller shift lever or loose screws holding this mechanism in place. See the exploded view diagrams of the SHIFT CAM and SHIFT FORK with all part names and numbers on the link below.
Cheers!

I have a 97 f-250 7.3 with a manual trans. and it wants to jump out of reverse if I dont go to 1st gear and then to rev. first.

Sounds like the shift lever is not coming completely out of 2nd gear. So, by shifting into 1st gear, you recenter the shift lever. You can confirm this by going under the truck and moving the 1st - 2nd lever on the side of the transmission with your hand. If the shifter goes into reverse after you manually recenter the 1-2 lever, then you need to correct the problem that prevents the "normal" recentering of the 1-2 shift lever.

Possibilities are: Bent shift rod; worn shifter; worn shift rod at connection to shift lever on transmission.
