HOW TO INSTALL A NEW CHAIN ON POULAN 16'' BLACKHAWK CHAINSAW

2004 POULAN 16'' BLACKHAWK CHAINSAW 36cc engine chain replacement procedure.

poulan model pp4218A chainsaw was running fine, cutting thru a mulberry tree about 35" across and after about 5 min the engine started running as though the chain was binding so I turned off the engine an withdrew it from the tree and allowed it to cool before trying to start again. The rope would pull out about 8" and then stop as though the engine is seized. this saw was a reconditioned one and I ran it long enough to have to replace the chain and then 5 min. after the new chain was installed this problem occurred. Is it possible that the starter id jammed or is the engine seized up?

Will a Poulan 16 " chainsaw gear fit a poulan 18 " chainsaw?

If you mean the drive gear on the end of the shaft, the answer should be yes. The radius for the drive gear does not change as the bar and chain length increase (within a few inches of bar and chain length). The determining factor for a larger bar and chain, in any chainsaw model, is the hp of the engine.

but its more likly to be either 5/32nd( for 3/8 low pro chain ) or 3/16 th for .325 chain

Tneed a chain for a poulan chain saw--44134 py - 16 3/8 is stamped on blade

Any good chainsaw shop will make a chain up for you, it is a 3/8 pitch 050 gauge ( 91sg ), all you need now is the drive link count ( probably 56 ) and you should be able to order on line, this is very standard chain

Cannot get chain back on bar of poulan pro electric chainsaw model 1630

Slide the bar on the studs all the way to the left, or rear of the chainsaw, and feed the chain around the motor sprocket, THEN along the top of the bar to the right, and around the bar's sprocket at the right end of the bar, if this doesn't work, report back. This is the original bar and chain correct?

Remove chain guard

The OM for your saw is is the best guide. You can download a replacement here (disengage the chain brake first - pull handle aft):
Poulan.com/CurrentModels
http://www.poulanpro.com/node4043.aspx
Type just the model numbers (choose the suffix after the list is provided).

A broad adjustment procedure can be found here. Completely remove the bar cover, slide the bar against the drive sprocket, remove the chain from the bar.

Poulan Pro 42cc Just Won't Cut It

The chain is directional, only cuts one way. If a new chain won't cut, it must be on backwards.

Chain slips off bar

I would suggest adjusting the tension and cleaning and debris along the chain path (guide bar).

Here's the manual for Poulan PP4218AV =>

http://72.3.225.179/manuals/165555e.pdf

Look at page 6-7 for instructions to adjust the chain tension and page 16 for cleaning the guide bar.

Poulan Farmhand chainsaw chain tightens too tight for motor to move chain

Make sure the chain is not over tightened. When adjusting the tightness, ensure there is at least 1/8" of looseness by pulling up on the chain in the middle of the bar and releasing it. If a chain becomes overheated because of leaning on the saw when the chain is dull, or lack of oil on the chain, it may expand in the track and not turn freely.
