I had to switch off by holding the power switch in for 10 seconds. It now won' re-start as there seems to be no resistance with the power button. Help please?

Open the side panel and reset the cmos, you can do this easily by removing the battery from the motherboard for 10 mins, make sure that the power cord is removed from the back of the pc first, after this time put the battery back in and see if the machine will power up, if it works you'll have to set the date and time again
let me know how you get on

good luck

Screen won't come on when laptop powers on

1. Software
- Try Fn + F5 or something like that

2. Electrical
- Remove battery, unplug power, hold power button for 60 seconds, turn on computer with power plug only, then shutdown, add battery and restart

3. Magnetic On/Off Switch to detect of Close/Open Lid
- Your magnet switch is fubar some how. Open up the speaker cover and see if your lid actuator switch that come in contact with the magnet on your lid cover is stuck or not (find where the magnet is in the back of the front lid cover, trace where the magnet area actually touches the base of the computer and you will find the switch)
- Workaround, start windows with lid at 30 degree angle

Compaq Presario s3310cl starts when hooking in power plug and will not shutoff using power button. Just started doing this today. Someone said to unhook everything and hold power button in for 20 seconds...

The On/Off switch is mounted inside of the Case Front Bezel. It is
very unlikely that it is broken. The problem is the front bezel
plastic switch (which is not really the switch) is more like a cap or a
knob that comes in contact with the actual switch is somehow broken.
You can remove the front bezel to see I am talking about.
Manually push On/push Off on the actual switch and your system will turn
On and Off like it should.

Hold down the ON/OFF button for 10 seconds, to see if that makes anything happen.

The disk-drive could be in a "cage" -- remove the screws holding the cage in place, and the whole cage can be removed. Then, unscrew the disk-drive from its cage.

Presario blank screen

I think this might be a common problem caused by windows sleep/hibernate not working (MS never actually got it to work well)
Try holding down the power button for 30 seconds. Wait 10 seconds, then start up again. If you get the same problem, try tapping the space bar repeatedly...
Otherwise your going to need to boot off a windows disk, and do a re-install/repair.

The power supply is shot. Best suggestion is to replace it. You need to make sure it is replaced with the same model power supply. Check online for a replacement unit.
