Note: How to reset video output settings
If you are attempting to change to an HDMI cable from a different video cable or if the video output settings do not match those required for the display in use, the screen may stay black. If the screen stays black for more than 30 seconds, you may need to reset the video output settings of the PS3.
To reset video output settings:
Turn the PS3 system off by holding the Power button on the front of the console till you see the power light turn red.
Then hold the power button on the front of the console for at least five seconds until you hear a second beep to turn the system on again. The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.
TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port
You need to know the TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port on your TV. For instance, if your TV has multiple "Input" or "Video" channels, (i.e., "Input 1", "Input 2", "Input 3", etc.), you will need to toggle through each "Input" channel on your TV until you find the correct channel that displays the HDMI picture. This is important to remember, especially if you do not see the HDMI picture after you connect the cable and configure the PS3 settings. Please refer to the TV instruction manual for more information.
Turn OFF the PS3TM system using the [MAIN POWER] switch (in the back)
Unplug the AC power cord from the electrical outlet
Turn OFF and unplug the TV
Connect one end of the HDMI cable into the [HDMI OUT] port on the back of the PS3 system. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable into the [HDMI Input] port of the TV or display monitor.

Plug in the AC power cord by connecting one end of the AC power cord into the [AC IN] port on the back of the PS3 system and the other end into an electrical outlet.
alt="line drawing of AC power cord">
Press the [MAIN POWER] switch on the rear of the system. A red light should appear on the front of the system indicating power is available.
Turn on the PS3 by pressing the touch-sensitive [On/Off button] on the system front. The red light will turn green, indicating the PS3 is now turned on.
Note: The blue light will also appear on the front of the system if you have a disc inserted.
Plug in the TV and turn the power on. The PS3 should detect the HDMI display device automatically. When prompted, "Do you want to output video and audio using HDMI?", select YES and press the alt="X button icon">button. (You may need to press the PS button on the center of the SIXAXISTMcontroller to enable the controller first).
The next screen will ask, "Do you want to automatically switch to the optimal setting?" Select YES and press the alt="X button icon">button.
On the next screen, the PS3 will display the maximum resolution capable on the display (i.e., 1080p). The screen will display, "Do you accept the setting?" You will have 30 seconds to confirm your answer.2 Select YES and press the alt="X button icon">button to save your settings. You have now completed the HDMI installation.
We had a similar problem, but was with the audio side. You can attempt the system reset like this; Use this procedure to reset all the receiver's settings to the factory default. Use the front panel controls to do this. Set MULTI-ZONE to OFF. 1 Switch the receiver into standby. 2 While holding down HOME MENU on the front panel, press ? STANDBY/ON. The display shows RESET ? NO ?. 3 Press ENTER on the front panel. 4 Select 'RESET' using ?/?, then press ENTER on the front panel. The display shows RESET? OK. 5 Press ENTER to confirm. OK appears in the display to indicate that the receiver has been reset to the factory default settings.
Hope this helps. I switched to Onkyo for my receiver.
Do the following:
Check the muting function on the TV/Speakers is turned OFF
The volume is at the appropriate level.
Check the HDMI cable on some other device. It could be that the cable is not functioning properly.
There is also the possibility that audio output settings are not matching. Go to 'system settings', select 'sound settings', and then 'Audio output settings'. Ensure that they are correct. Do not use Auto for the time being.
I would first try changing the inputs if there is an HDMI cable connected the PS3 will detect it and change the output to HDMI.
Make sure when you connect any HDMI cables that the power is off on ALL Units that are using HDMI.
Connect the cables then power up all units.
Change TV and Receiver or Amp to correct HDMI Inputs.
On the PS3 go to Display Settings over to the left of the Crossbar.
Select output settings and select HDMI and everything after select AUTOMATIC!
Then Set your Audio (Also use Auto) and Save by pressing X.
Your PS3 should detect when you set up a HDMI connection then just follow the onscreen instructions. If it does'nt unplug the HDMI cable and use the scart cable. Then unplug the scart cable and plug in the HDMI cable your PS3 should detect this HDMI cable and it will notify you on screen. Hope this helps
Greetings ! Hopefully you followed the instructions on page 18 - 20 of the Yamaha manual... then set the Flat screen or monitor to one of the two inputs that you view movies or dvd's on . I would try it first without HDMI cables as even the book states some monitors do not accept or see hdmi. try it with the dvd cables.
You have to follow the book carefully as I have the same system . Its a complicated system and I was informed , "a lot of people do not know how to set the system up and end up returning a perfect system..." from the Geek squad from Best Buy. Just follow carefully the manual.
For the setup functions you have to use either the monitor out (a yellow jack on the top-right corner of the back) or you have to use component video out. HDMI will NOT work for setting up the system. This is one complaint to Yamaha from all of us.
to all those who cannot see any display..hold down the on/off button until it beeps once, then wait a few seconds until it beeps again, the ps3 will have reset itself and will adjust the visual settings to fit your tv
