Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop - Can't connect to internet

I have the above computer with a Comcast modem and Linksys Wireless B 2.4 GHz broadband router. When I attempt to get online, I receive the following message: "IE cannot display the webpage - most likely causes (i) you are not connected to internet, (ii) the website is encountering problems, (iii) typing error." It's clear I'm not connected to the internet. It seems that the modem and router work as I can get online from a laptop using the router. As such, I believe the issue is with my desktop. I've skipped the router to go directly from the modem to the desktop. I've also pulled out another ethernet cord. No luck. Any other thoughts? Thanks!

Seems my Network Adapter had somehow been disabled. To fix, I went to My Computer --> Properties --> Hardware --> Device Manager --> Network Adapters and then re-enabled it by clicking on the X next to Broadcom. Thanks for all the help!

What operating system is running? It sounds like some of the parts needed for networking are missing or corrupt. They can usually be reinstalled without too much trouble.

If this is a problem that started recently and you have System Restore available, you might try restoring to a date when networking was working properly.

The NIC (network interface card) is integrated into the motherboard of the 2400 computer. Most likely that circuit is bad. To fix it you’ll have to replace the motherboard or purchase a NIC card and install it into one of the PCI slots on the motherboard.

I have a dell 2400 desktop computer. I recently got FIOS and they hooked my wife's computer to their router with an ethernet cable. Can I also hook my dell up the same way?

Depends on the hardware. Is it a router or modem? Does is have extra ports in the back,

Router with extra ports, just connect new device with wire or even wireless if it has wireless.

Modem, most likey you have to buy a router.

Hello
Is the ethernet line from the router plugged into the ethernet card on the back of the pc?

Not the phone line. That needs to be in the modem.

Can't get router to connect to Dell Dimension 2400 desktop

Try turning OFF DHCP from services. This may fix your problem. Look for "DHCP Client", double click on it (or right click and choose properties), STOP the service, then set it's startup type to 'manual'. That'll kill it. See DHCP is what "Gives out/assigns addresses" and on the ONLY PC, it is the First one... 192.168.0.1... Both PC's will be assigning themselves as that, and that will cause a conflict. As the Router now does the DHCP work. Of course ensure you DO have DHCP set on router.

Cant get on the internet

The longer the cable, the slower the connection.

It should work with the cable as it is not "too" long.

I would try turning the modem and router off for one minute and then turning back on.

Ok, my computers internet is not working...Read and help me!

Wireless internet is basically a radio, and radio signals can be interfered with. Simply running a microwave can make your signal go out. Many wireless phones run on the same frequency as your computer, which can mess it up. In any case, wired is always better than wireless.

Dell Dimension 4700C Desktop PC, internet issue.

Try and test the computer and modem connection by hooking it up directly by an ethernet cable..

If the internet connection stays solid when cabled up..

Then try either changing or removing the wep or wpa encryption on your wireless network, and seeing if that allows the computer to stay connected.

Also try disabling the firewall on your computer, and also on your modem.

Internet no longer working, but internal network is fine.

i agree with all the above.. it's definately clear as mud how the network is designed and or funtioning. The machines connected to the wireless d-link router.. are they via cat5 inthe wired ports or wireless ? is the server the machine thats connecting to the switch and wiress router and modem? i'd say reset all switches modems routers and machines.. shut them all down.. then fire the cable modem, then the wireless router then the desktop switch then the server, the workstations and the one lonely wireless.. run "ipconfig /all" on all machines and if they aren't all sharing common ips and access, provide the results here for further investigation.

Dell dimension 2400, wireless internet

Hi Whitney,

I was able to locate manual and a troubleshooting guide.
  1. Manual
  2. Troubleshooting Guide
Summary: Your modem only supports 802.11b standard, which limits the throughput to max. 11Mbps (compare to 802.11g = 54Mbps, 802.11n = 108 Mbps). In other words: your connection is only about 10% of the speed compared to a wired connection via Ethernet cable (100 Mbps). So - if you can - you should try to use a wired instead of a wireless connection, but you have to decide what makes is more important to you: having no cable and you can be away from the modem or the connection speed.

This also means - and that is in regards to APremkumar's solution - that you can skip all 802.11n adapters (this would just be a waste of money). Since you will not find an adapter that only connects to a class b network, look for something like "802.11b/g".
An example page is here. You can choose between an internal (PCI card) or external (USB adapter) solution. Both are ok and the decision depends on the availablity of a free USB port on your Dell and your comfort of opening the computer case or not. (You can always come back here and ask for help;-)

If you have any more questions, please let me know - I'm happy to help!

Dell Dimension DE051:Wireless Internet Problem (Can't Load Sites)

contact Comcast and have them reset your IP address. also have them ping your modem after they reset IP.
Also, see Linksys website for LELA (easylink advisor) to add devices to network. Uses a good bit of memory so don't allow to run automatically at start up.
