Question about Teac Audio Players & Recorders

Open Question

I have a Teac A-1500 reel to reel tape deck. That is about ~40 years old, and is used infrequently. When I tried to play a tape today, I found that the rubber drive wheel that should move to the capstan in play or mode does not. I can move it manually, but it doesn't return to the idle position on rewind either. I think it might be dust or dirt in the mechanism, but am reluctant to open it, and wouldn't know what to use to clean it anyway. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. It has been a reliable unit, an I have many large reels of music that I'd sure like to hear again. Thank you, Alan Christian

SOURCE: RX-303 NAKANICHI & TEAC-2000X REEL TO REEL

These decks need a complete overhaul. There are belts and "idlers" inside that are made from rubber that have dried out and slip. The Rx-303 needs a tire replacement. This tire only comes into play when in play mode. The FF and REW functions are powered only by a belt. Changing hte idler tire is a bit tricky in these units if you have not replaced one before. Given the value of these units, I'd recommend that you have a servicer in your area overhaul these. The parts expense should not exceed $15 for either deck. Check in the area for the labor costs. Both units are definately worth the repair cost.

SOURCE: I have a teac a-4010

After much frustration, mainly from working with mainly unreadable prints, I was able to locate the source of MY problem :
There are two .9 ohm power resistors on the power supply board. They are responsible for supplying AC to various motors and relays. One of them was burned open and the other was reading 250 times what it should have. I replaced both of them with 10 amp inline fuses for now. Radio Shack sells 1 ohm 20 watt resistors which should do the job. IDK what the reason is for the low value resistor.

FF problem on Teac Reel to Reel

You need new brake pads installed as the ones in there now are dried up and may have fallen off. This is very common with older decks or 30-40 years old.
I am still working on these decks at Skywave Tape Deck Repair in the Chicago area.

My Teac LP-R500 audio cassette player squeaks when playing. Tapes do not squeak on my other player.

It all depends on where the squeak is coming from. Some very clean rubber parts make kind of a squeak but I don't think that is your problem if you use cartridge cleaning systems. The real answer as a 40 year plus Tape Deck Technician is to get in there and see what is causing the squeak- it may need some oil in reel table, Pinch Roller or even the Capstan Bearing. Manufacturers do not like to put oil into
unit as it makes for no repairs and you will not have to buy a new one.
I worked at Teac but this unit is far after my exit- I still do repairs full time on the product though. I am sure I could resolve it- I am in the Chicago are.

You may be listening off tape and there is a lag of time between the record head and the play head which is what you may be concerned with. This is normal for any three head deck be it cassette or open reel.
Slowing the speed will lengthen the time of the delay and speeding it up will shorten it.

Music playing backwards

Well, not being there to try some diagnostics, there can be a number of reason that the tape plays backwards at times. One reason is that the tapes are 4 channel discrete tape requiring a 4 track 4 channel deck- this would mean track 2,4 are recorded in the forward direction. A Stereo (2 channel 4 track deck) play tracks 2,4 in the opposite direction. That is why you turn the tape over on some decks. Other possibilities could be tape path skew, that reverse relay is NOT changing the head that "listens: to the tape and that is just the start of what it could be. When a new person starts to use a deck of such age- it can be correct to assume that the deck is not working in some respect. A Tape deck Technician such as myself would know how to determine if the deck was working correct or not and know and have parts to correct it. I worked in the Factory Service in Chicago for Teac and actually have one coming into my shop in the near future. After 40 years of working on these I am still at it. I am sorry there may not be an easy answer to this.

Cannot diengage tape heads . transport will not play or record but will rew and fast forward

The reel motor drive is independent of the head base actuator system.
You may need a new belt for the cam system or possibly a gear depending on what they used in this transport. This is a job for a Technician. I have not worked on one of those recently but have done thousands of other Teac and other brand decks over 40 years.

With TEAC A-2300s. Install new tape from supply side to take up side.

It goes from the left reel over the tension arm under the stationary guide in the head stack under the lifters between the Pinch Roller and Capstan shaft and then under the rigfht tension arm and threaded onto the reel. This is from memory but I am sure I have threaded 1000 or more decks in 40 years of service.

I have a teac 3340 reel to reel recorder and believe it can only function in 2 speeds 7 1/2 ips and 15 ips. I have many reel to reel recordings that are 3 3/4 ips. Is there an adapter or gadget I can use...

In short, no. if you look closely you will see the Teac 3340 has a much larger/thicker capstan shaft than other Teac reel decks. This feature allows the faster tape speeds...7 1/2 and 15 ips. In order to slow down the Teac 3340 you would have to change the flywheel to one from another deck that was made to run at 3 3/4 and 7 1/2. Which is possible but some work..plus you would have to find a slower speed flywheel from another Teac deck. Also to maintain performance, the bias and Eq positions for the slower speeds would have to be readjusted from 7 1/2 and 15.

TEAC 2000R SITTING FOR WHILE NOW WILLNOT PLAY

This sounds like the solonoids are not working. This can be a power supply problem, a control problem, or the solonoids themselves. In any case, this will need to see a service shop. Where are you located?
