Iriver pmp-120 boot failure

I have an iriver pmp-120 when I turn it on it comes up with a boot failure screen. Do you have a fix for this item and if so how much does it cost to get fixed?

    The advice that I got from Guru did not help at all. I had windows run a system error check on the player and that also did not help.

  • bambinosslav Nov 16, 2008

    The message in the screen is Boot failure

  • bambinosslav Nov 16, 2008

    I have already done that 3 times with no improvement.

  • bambinosslav Nov 16, 2008

    I do not know where the installation cd is. Now when I open the player under my computer, there is nothing showing on the player.

  • bambinosslav Nov 16, 2008

    I do not have the installtion cd, so I went to shamrockman.net but there wasn't anything to download.

  • bambinosslav Nov 16, 2008

    Iriver does not have any downloads available for the pmp-120 nor the 1.23 firmware.

  • bambinosslav Nov 17, 2008

    Ginko,

    That worked! My iriver has the firmware version 1.23, but the website you sent me to did not have a 1.23. I tried the 1.25 first and it did not work, so I tried the 1.24 version and the player is up and working.

  • bambinosslav Nov 17, 2008

    I just wanted to say Thank
    It worked great.

    I did repost to let you know the slight changes I had to do to get it to work. I also emailed your because I could not get back to your solution to accept it, but I had left the page open with your solution and when I realized that I accepted your solution.

    Thanks Again

Hi,

Initially, the message "BOOT FAILURE" is significant. It indicates that the unit could not even start itself properly. This is a software problem, more specifically the firmware. If performing a reset (pinhole on the top) does not resolve the issue, then perhaps what is required is a flash or firmware update. Pls try:

  • download/update the firmware, pls start here;
  • Restart the iriver in emergency mode;
  • Plug it into your computer;
  • turn it on and hold the O button (enter button);
  • Click on the firmware button;
  • reformat the player.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

 dload the version you want to run.  PMP will show 1.23 , now run 1.23.. Save the dloads in a new folder on your computer.. There should be (7) items that dload to your computer.

    download it from:
    www.shamrockman.net

  • fixyy Nov 16, 2008

    just copying the files to your PMP Player will NOT work.

    delete ALL (7) of the system files and folders.
    1.) BMP folder
    2.) etc folder
    3.) system file
    4.) (4) "Version-[0x..... " files..

    So there are (7) items I has to delete. Once deleted go to the folder you saved the dloads to.  click and drag each item to the drive your PMP player is connected to. Once all (7) items have been placed on your PMP player disconnect it, turn off the power, wait a minute and turn it back on.Please let me know  if this helps..

    Hello,

    The failure boot is caused beacuse vital files are missing in the PMP.
    You have to conect it to your computer are reinstal the software.

    (do you still have the isbatlation CD?)

Try pressing the reset button that is located at the bottom of the player near the hold switch.

    Sorry, I was away.

    Follow carefully the instructions on the following website.

    That shoud fix your I river, if it does not work the disk is damaged.

    Here is the fix: Boot Failure

    Sometimes just downloading and following the procedure in Boot Failure does not work, because the system files cannot be overwritten, in this case follow the additional instructions here to delete manually the system files.

IRiver Screen

You'd need to find someone with a dead one (dead for some other reason) you can then canibalise.

The LCD screen could be replaced you just need to find an appropriate alternative. eBay or web search would probably find one, But you'd need to find the spec of the original first.

Iriver don't repair but do they sell spares?

Boot failure or just nothing?

Boot failure would be the hard disk.
Just nothing would indicate that the system board is dead.

You don't mention using the mains power adaptor.
