TI-83 Plus Went Dead

Our son's TI-83 Plus started having eratic lines and then a blank screen during class. It went dead on him. We have installed new AAA batteries and a new lithium battery and tried the suggestions on this site, all to no avail. When we put the new lithium battery in, there was a single line on the screen, but that's it! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Has it been dropped recently? The screen may have cracked from impact. Press the Reset button on the back using a ball point pen.

Using a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition and the screen just went blank in the middle of a class. changed the batteries, didn't help. cleaned the connectors, didn't help. tried to change the resoluti

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

What do you mean by "changed the resolution"?

I have an old TI-83 and there are vertical lines across the screen which have dead pixels, I assume. Can this be repaired or do I have to buy a new one.

While someone skilled in electronics may be able to fix it with enough time, the cost in time and labor would far outweigh the cost of a new calculator.

My son was using the ti84 plus calculator. All of a sudden the screen went blank and now it appears to be dead.we tried changing the batteries but it didnt help.we last changed them about two weeks ago

It may not be as bad as you think. The batteries were depleted and the calculator turned itself off due to lack of electric energy.
So you changed the batteries. However after you put new batteries, the screen did not appear to be alive. It may just be too dim.
  1. Make sure batteries are good, and placed correctly (respect the polarity diagram)
  2. Press ON button once ( or if you have the TI SilverLink cable, insert it in the IO port)
  3. Press [2nd] key once
  4. Press the [UPArrow] and hold pressure
  5. The screen should start darkening.
  6. As you keep pressure on the UP arrow, a number should appear on the top right corner of the screen.
  7. Release the UpArrow key when screen contrast is adequate.
  8. If you make it too dark, Reverse the process : [2nd] key and [DownArrow]

TI-83 countdown

Pressing 2nd then the up or down arrows is how you change the contrast on the TI-83. All you need to do is press the 2nd key then hold the down arrow to get your screen back. The countdown that you saw was just the value the calculator assigns to the contrast. It goes from 0-10.

Hope that helps!

Try replacing both the AAA batteries and the back-up batteries. This should probably fix the problem.
