I have a light switch in my apartment that controls both the light in the kitchen and power to both sockets of a dual outlet. How do I adjust the wiring so that the outlet is always powered? The wiring...

This is not good wiring option. It is not good to have light and outlet on the same switch without different fuse. I suggest to insert another little switch on light connection. Than you can have control of both. Or you must find main phase (hot wire) inside switch box. This will be always on for tester when you try different switch position. When you find this main (hot) wire, you disconnect one of another two wire (after you disconnect power), than give power on and test light and socket (one of them will not work). If this is outlet, you must connect this wire to main (hot) one. Don't work when power on. Just test it with tester, and than disconnect when you change position of wire.
Good luck and be careful!

?-Is it ok to swap wires within fuse box if they amps on the breakers are the same? See details below... Ok, so I have a Sylvania fuse box. Both my A/C unit and my Range run off of thin, dual 40amp...

Yes it is OK, Your gfi's are real sensitive, anything can trip them off, a florescent light will trip them off. Anything not grounded in the circuit will cause it to trip. Take care of that later or don't use it. The 40 amps, I would just forget about the stove for now, get the ac going, cook in the microwave. But swapping the breaker is no big deal. Hope this helps.

I assume you mean circuit breaker when you say fuse. If you reset the breaker to "on" and the lights still don't work, look for a GFI outlet somewhere in the circuit. It could be tripped which will shut off the current downstream from it if it is set up to guard the downstream circuit.

Pushmatic breaker keeps tripping everytime I hit

You have it shorted out somewhere along the line. If it is a light switch you are switching, what have you done lately to make this trip? Anything? You might have a bad breaker. You can check it by shutting off the power, pull the wire out of the tripping breaker, put it in another breaker, turn the power back on, switch the breaker on, then hit the switch and see what happens. If it snaps off, it is not the breaker, but the switch, the wires in the box, or the lights, or something along the line, you will have to check each one. New construction has made all lights and all receptacles separate, so if your house is old, you might be looking at receptacles too. Check anything plugged in to an outlet, make sure there is nothing shorting. Hope this helps.

Eaton Arc Fault Breaker type BRAF tripped. I reset it but lights will not work. Ideas please?

My arc fault breaker trips in my bedroom when ever a load is put on line. The trunk line comes into a three gang switch box and feeds the entire room. At times I can turn my ceiling fan and light on for 10 to 20 minutes before the breaker trips. Other times the breaker will trip when either switch is first turned on. I plugged a 4 watt night light in a wall receptical, without the ceiling light or fan on, it also trips the breaker. I have had other plug in lamps, 60 watt, work in other recepticals for a while. The problem seems to appear in all recepticals and lighting in the room.

Opened breaker to change light switch.closed breaker numerous times before it engaged.

When you relaced the light switch, did you use the "quick stab" holes on the back or the side screws? The arc fault breakers can trip if using the quick stab holes on the back because they may not make a tight contact. This could be represented if the circuit breaker trips when the light switch is turned from "off" to "on". Try connecting using the screws on the side of the device instead.

Arc fault breaker trips sporadically

Are there any heaters anywhere in the circuit for this breaker? (ie: bathroom fan w/light and heater) If yes, I would suspect and inspect them first. Also, any type breaker will trip more easily if the electrical connection screws on the breaker are not tight enough...check to make sure that's not the case.

15 amp Gould breaker trips every 24 to 48 hours

As seemingly with everything else, these devices were once very reliable but now fail early in life.
Assuming that this is no GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) equipped breaker, you must  have a bad one. If it is, you may have some stray currents tripping the breaker.
While finishing up on our new home and putting breakers in the main box for the first time, one brand new breaker refused to stay set even though the circuit was OK and no loads on that branch connected at all. In the two years we have been here, we had to replace a second one acting just as you describe.
