Microtek scanmaker s400 no image

when scanning pictures to my laptop, the scanner recognizes the size of the image but does not show the image. instead, all that is showing is a bunch of red, black and blue lines. likewise, when attempting to scan text, i get nothing but a black screen. this also happened when i installed the scanner to my desktop, but it fixed itself somehow. when looking at the monitor gamma setup, i'm supposed to match up the two colors but there is no color in the box to be matched - only gray lines. any help would be appreciated.

i have uninstalled and reinstalled the software and downloaded the new drivers from the microtek website.
