My laptop has no problem playing DVDs but for a while it has stopped reading CDs (data/music/software/etc) spontaneously. Sometimes I have to tilt/hold the laptop at a certain angle/position before it reads the disc. I'm not sure this helps as the position of such tilt is not constant. It just fails to recognise the CD in the first place...I suppose the problem lies there but am not sure of what to do. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you may need a new drive. If I remember correctly those run about $100 and if you feel confident and read the directions (and research it correctly on the internet) you should be able to install it yourself.
Did you try another CD or just 1 CD could not read by your DVD RW? Would you please make the DVD poped out and re-set it again. It seems the problem of communication becasue the code rate of DVD and CD is different. Its not related with the lens.
