I have a dell xps 400 on a XP os, with a Phillips dvd rw 8801 and a tsst corp cd-rw drive. Both were working till a recent update from MS Have tried to reinstall driver from the dell driver reset and come up with errors. Dell has said to reload the drivers from the CD's. Big problem if the drives dont work how do you reload. System information says the drives exist but need to be installed. Plun and play does not help. Anybobody have any ideas?

a few things..have you reinstalled any updates for Windows XP? any of them might fix the problem. also...try this...go to Control Panel, then Device Manager, and find your DVD drive in the list...you might have to click on the + sign to see your drive...right click on the name, and click disable...click ok through the prompts, and restart your PC. Now, go back to Device Manager, repeat this, but click Enable, and XP should reinstall drivers for your DVD burner. Hopefully, this helps things. Best of Luck!
those are the basic drivers for all cd. dvd, and rw drives. if you are trying to use the drive to burn a cd/dvd you need to purchase software for it your download a free burning software from filehippo.com called xpburner or burnerxp i cant recall the exact name
I'd first try another burning programming to see if it works. if not I'd try the drive on a different pc to ensure its not the drive. if the drive works on another pc then i will reload the os and dell recommended if it doesnt works i'd returen if for warrenty if it has any or i'd replace the drive myself :)
