Fuse blows While starting the MTD 760-770, 42" riding mower the engine starts to crank then all goes dead & check the fuse and it is blown. Sometimes I get it to start several times before this happens.. I'm looking for a short but need an Electrical Schematic to trouble shoot the system. I have searched the internet - no joy. Where can I get one for free? If all fails I suppose I can draw my own, but that will be time consuming and the lawn needs mowed! Thank You for your time Ty
You are correct the number is bad, I'll check the starter and replace it. I did read out what I could using another schematic I found from another model, it was sorta close on some things and I found no shorts which support your idea. I still would love the correct schemo for the mower - Model 13A1760F700, 13 HP Eng, 38" blade cut, 6 speed transmission. I did get it started one more time to finish the lawn.
Thank you 4x4papa, your have been a huge help.

Your starter is overloading the fuse. Replace the starter or check the fuse size. Can be a big as 30amp. By the way, that model number doesn't work. If your still wanting a schematic, check the number and let me know.
Good luck and please let us know the outcome, good or bad.
Thanks so much.

NO
a battery with a higher crank specification only means that you can spin the engine for longer before the battery goes flat
blowing fuses is from a dead short in the wiring, battery connect up wrong, problem relays
basically the positive of the battery is through the fuse) connected directly to ground at some point
Probably dead gas from sitting too long. Dump it out & put in fresh gas.Could have moisture in it. Pull out spark plug & crank it over several times after putting gas & let it sit a while to dry out or blow it out with compressed air. It should go.
White smoke or semi white can be produced in several ways. One way is oil this is normally a whitish blue to blue smoke and has the apparent smell of oil being burned.
Sounds like you electric blade clutch is bad. I just had the same thing happen to my exmark mower. I was cutting grass and the engine just shut down. It would not crank over. Checked the fuses and replaced one blown fuse. The engine wanted to crank over but it was locked up. I looked the engine over and seen that the bearing in the electric clutch seized up causing the clutch to melt.
SOUNDS LIKE YOU DUMPED SOME EXCESS GAS IN ENGINE,PULL PLUG(S) AND CLEAN OR REPLACE, CHECK CYLINDER FOR EXCESS FUEL BY CRANKING WITH PLUGS OUT,SHOULD SPIT ANY EXCESS FUEL OUT OF HOLE,REPLACE PLUGS AND TRY TO START.
Thanks 4x4papa,
