Broken Gear-shifter I have a Raleigh C-30 bicycle with a broken right gear-shifter. It cracked when I fell and it will not work. I am wondering the cheapest way to get a new one and if it is something I can fix with a simple on-line instruction of some sort.

SOURCE: lower the seat on a Raleigh SC30 Bicycle

There should be bolt or quick release lever holding seat in position. Loosen the bolt or lever, adjust seat, retighten. If seat post is stuck, apply some WD-40 or similar lubricant, wait a while, and try again. you may have to twist seat to turn post and break loose if there is rust.

Gear changer stuck and gears won't change

The cable for the chain shift mechanism (derailleur) has slipped or broken. The cable will need to be loosened down by the chain then put your shifter in the position closest to the gear it is actually in, then pull the cable snug and hold it while you tighten the cable. This will also verify that the cable is working. There are position limit adjusters so the shift mechanism should be in the correct position on one of the gears when there is no tension on the cable.

Rear derailler will not click and hold shifted gear

Sounds like the internal spring that indexes the shifter is either broken or missing. I believe these bikes came with twist shifters. Those springs are hard to find nowadays and it's just as inexpensive to replace. Your local bicycle shop should be able to find a suitable replacement shifter for your bicycle.

Broken gear shift lever

Here's how to repair a broken shifter toe peg on a motorcycle. The shifter toe peg on my Buell Cyclone was broken off almost completely flush with the shift lever, and the factory used thread locker when they installed it, so the only way to get it out was with an easy out bolt extractor, which is a special drill bit. First I drill a good-sized hole in the middle of the shifter peg bolt, Thia is the most important step. I made sure the hole was in the center of the bolt so I didn't damage the threads on the gear shift lever. Then I put the easy out in the drill, set it to reverse, and it pulled the old broken bolt out. Then I cleaned out the threads in the shift lever and installed the new shifter toe peg using thread locker. Buell recommends using red Loctite. On my Harley Davidson FXR I installed a new shifter toe peg without using thread lock, and it unscrewed itself and fell of after a few weeks of riding. You definitely want to use some type of thread locker. There are no torque specs for putting the new motorcycle shifter toe peg on. Buell just says tighten it until snug. If you have ever crashed your motorcycle, than you've had to deal with this problem from the crash damage. I hope this video helps get you back on the road.

I dont know how to put the gear switcher back on

The gear switcher (cycling terminology: Shifter) should be attached via a band with a simple bolt through it. The shifter will attach to the handlebar (right side for rear shifter/ left side for front shifter).
coachphil.jpg If you have shifters that are shaped like a barrel as in the picture, then you have to remove the grip on the side you will install the shifter. slide the shifter onto the bar and tighten the set screw in the housing (should be just back of where the cable comes out). Reinstall the grip and there you go.

This is a simple proceedure, however if things are not tightened properly you can get into an accident, for this reason I would recommend taking the bike to a bike shop and having them reinstall the shifter and make sure that everything is safe and functioning properly.

Final Note: If your shifter was on the bike and functioning properly and fell off, then you need to go into a bike shop. The shifter has something broken and either needs to be replaced or fixed. Shifters do not just fall off.

Broken shimano 105 flight deck shifter

You may have broken your derailleur cable. Your cable securing bolt on your front derailleur might have worked loose just enough for the cable to get some slack in it so that your derailleur isn't moving. Try completely loosening the cable bolt at your front derailleur. Pull on the cable and click the control to downshift to the inside crank gear . That should remove all the slack from the cable. Worse case scenario is when you pull on the cable it will completely pull out and it has broken at the shifter. You will have to replace it with a new one. If it isn't broken and you can still shift with the cable make sure your limit screw is properly adjusted for the inside crank ring and then pull all the slack out of the cable with the shifter shifted to that gear. Tighten the bolt that holds the cable in place and try the shifter again. It should now shift normally. If it doesn't you will have to take the bike in to have the shifter repaired. These shifters are not easy to repair unless you have the tools, parts and experience. Hope this helps.
