Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

At first the screen went white and I had a ever moving set of hotizontal stripes running around the set. This is then taken over by a black block which used to reduce until one had a normal picture. Now the black block is so large that when watching "strictly" one is lucky to be able to see the shoes of the dancers! Where do I go from here. The set has been reliable and I have only had one repair in connection with the on/off switch and the "hold" and that was years ago. The set was brought from one flat where it has hardly been used to me new home whilst my partner has my Sony! Ideally I wish to have a TV which can be used as a monitor with my PC but there is no urgency. Do I have cheese and bread for Christmas or can my Hitachi be repaired? Thank you for your help. Spoke to my nearest Dealer who said the TV was finished due to horizontal hold failure. Said a component would cost over £100 for Hitachi repair. I have sound and the picture is hidden by a black curtain. Can you verify the cost of the part required? If you cannot giv me this info. free then do not send me any more emails. Best of luck. NH

Hi. It seems that the g2 voltage of the picture tube is too high, resulting in a white screen, often with white horizontal lines. The g2 (= second grid) voltage is derived from the flyback high voltage. The voltage divider is mostly integrated in the flyback trafo housing.(including the adjustment knobs). A failure in this divider may lead to this defect. The static you hear may come from sparking in the divider. The flyback trafo is soldered onto the main printed cirrcuit board. Sometimes, one of the pins sits loose in the soldering pads.
Turn on the set and observe for any sparking around the entire flyback circuitry, and, or the flyback trafo itself
The screen turns black after a while, as a too high beamcurrent is detected. The set disables the flyback. Stand-by blinks meaning that there is a fault condition.
Be carefull with the high voltages. The flyback voltage is very high (20-30 Kilovolts !) and may be lethal !!

then ur picture alone is getting affected,... this can be due to your hotizontal or vertical ICs that is the problem

I have a 2006 Sony KDF-55-E2000, just replaced the lamp and housing and now I have a green stripe at the top and a red stripe at the bottom. Is it worth having this set repaired if I do not have an ex

We had the same problem. Let it be and now the tv won't turn on. If I understand correctly from what I've read it's the optical block and they seem to be just as much as a new tv.

FAINT VERTICAL PIN STRIPES MOVINGS TO FULL AREA OF SCREEN

Hi,Yes your problem sounds like the DMD board. This is how it works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dlp1.htm Basically the light of the lamp goes through a tunnel that carries a color wheel(rotating disc with a gamma of colors that creates the colors on your tv)then the light of the lamp goes through the DMD board which is a chip composed of around 2 million pixels that creates the images and colors. When it starts to fail it will create black bars, pixelation, color distortion or white dots on screens. Here's a video that will help you find where the DMd chip is located : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jr_9A5Xd2Q Have a blessed one!

Alot of red and double image

I had same problem. First went in tomenu and went to set up settings and went to convergence area. I then reset this back to default, which I later was told I should have not done so do not attempt this it will temporarily fix issue but problem will persisit.
I found a local tv repair man thru tvrepairguy.com or something like that as they are hard to find.
The issue turned out to be the convergence boards or circuits, He then went in to master control and rset the convergence settings for the main picture by lining up the red and blue lines on to a white cross on the screen until it is black and white with no red or blue protruding vertically or laterally. He then did this for 7 points around center picture moving the lines. He suggests you play with this for awhile in a position you would normally sit in and at proper eye level to give you the truest picture for alignment. The part cost 109 to replace with labor and service total was 331. The repairman was very nice and explained the issue should be fixed and we should get another 6 to 7 years out of television.
Hope this helps,

I have vertical stripe in the middle of the screen of my panasonic plasma tv

Generally speaking vertical stripes whether they are black or white can be caused by bad connections at the panel cables. If this set is under warranty, bring it in for warranty service. If you can, take a picture of the problem as well and have that with you. Moving the set to the servicer can sometimes "cure" the problem especially if it is a connection problem.

Thin red horizontal lines across screen

replace the focus block or try to adjust the screen control on the focus block for red only. this will affect the white balance of the set so adjust it carefully. the focus block is located on the front inside the set. remove the speaker cover then the 4 screws on the front plate. the focus block is 3" x 2" black box with 6 adjustment posts three for focus and three for screen. adjust only the affected screen (R).

Green shadows surrounding bright whites

finally a consumer that gives us plenty of info :)
sounds like an overdriven green tube, the only thing you can try is to find the G2/Focus block assembly, either behind front speaker grill or remove back of set and look for a black box approximately 5"X5" , this box will have 6 philips type adjustment screws(plastic) 3 are for focus, do NOT adjust these,
the other 3 are marked "screen" the center screen adjustment screw is for green, turn it VERY slowly counterclockwise while the set is running and pray that your problem dis-appears, be advised that this is a HIGH VOLTAGE device so one hand in your back pocket the other hand turns the screwdriver, if the problem does not go away you have a poor green tube, good luck, sorry I can`t give you the exact location of the G2/Focus block, manufacturers move them to different places every year.

Picture off on screen vertically-Black at top of screen and pic below bottom of screen

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
