If I understand, it seems that there is some issue with the sound driver, to resolve this, you need to visit your computer's manufacturer website for example, if you are using dell then visit dell.com or if hp then hp.com, then search for support and the click on driver downloads and look for audio drivers, download it and then install it and restart your computer.
windows update may be able to provide a driver under the custom scan and the hardware section...in order to pull sound drivers from the computer's manufacturer you have to go to their website and typically select the support and drivers download section and select your computer name and model number. You should then be able to download and install the drivers. Good luck!
