The power switch on my 1 year old Compaq laptop got the ribbon wire pulled out and I have an older Compaq laptop (about 3 years) that I want to switch out. Can I do this?
Only if the wire configuration matches the new one, if they have not changed the basic design you should be good to go.

Basically, for most of the notebooks, there is a Password provided to secure the data in the Hard Drive and restrict it from un-authorize access.
However, if the Drive Lock Password is set and forgot, it is not possible to unlock the Drive without the password.
However, you can try contacting any of your Friends who is familier with Hard Drives and is a technician who should be having some advanced methods to remove the Password or the Circuit Board of the Hard Drive.

Wireless connection? If so, make sure the wireless device is enabled on the newer one. If it's a red light, the wireless device may be faulty. If so, just get an external USB wireless device and use that. Check to see that the same lights are on with both PCs.

The problem is the graphic card. There are some guys who manage to resolder the ATI Chip on the card but the best thing is to buy a working one on ebay and replace the graphic card under the keyboard. Possible board part numbers 336968-001 or 336969-001 or 336970-001

The wire config was the same but the actual power button was not the same form as the other computer. One is round one is oval.
