This camcorder uses USB for pictures only. To access pictures, plug in USB cable, set the camcorder to Play and to Memory Card.
To transfer video you need a firewire cable and card. Actual cable will depend on connection your computer has, typically it will be something like this: FireWire_cables.jpg
Additionally, to transfer video you will need a video capture software and codecs, unless the software has the codecs (Nero does). Unfortunately all free video editing software I tried was unable to deal with HD. I had various levels of success with Windows Movie Makver, Ulead and Nero.
You may want to record video in non-HD, and see if you are able to capture that. If your computer can capture that but not HD, and you have the codecs installed, you will need to investigate your computer.

It is of course very frustrating that Canon would include nothing with the camcorder to assist users with video caputure.
The iMac for example only accepts a firewire transfer, not USB. If your laptop doesn't have Firewire port, you can spend $60 on a 500MB external hard drive with both a firewire and USB port, load it onto the hard drive, then import it into your computer's movie program via the USB.

Canon HV30 isn't recognized by my relatively new iMac G5 (3.0 Ghz, running 10.5.6) My older Sony camcorder gets recognized instantly, but when I attach this new Canon HV30, I get nothing (from iMovie or Systems Profiler.) Any advice?

I'm trying to import video from my brand new Vixia HV30 to final cut express and it's just not working. I had no problem with my old camcorder. No doubt the new camcorder captures beautiful video, but seems like a complicated mess just to import it into my lap top to edit. I'm ready to return it. I'm not technically inclined so can anyone help me with a simple step by step solution.
