Question about Nikon COOLSCAN 5000 ED Film Scanner

Launch Nikon Coolscan, but browser/scanner window doesn't open

This is the second time this has happened to me. I launch the Nikon Coolscan software, and the window that usually pops up, the one that has the scan control buttons (preview/scan) is missing. It self corrected a little while back but now I'm having this confounding problem again. Do you think it has something to do with the connection to the computer? Could the firewire cord be bad? Help!!

I'm having a similar problem. When the scan software opens, the window with the menus has the scan button inoperable and the upper scanner menu has the slide feeder inactive (I'm using the SF-210). Other times when I opened the scan software I got a box that said something was wrong with the hardware or that the hardware was not connected and not active. This problem fixed itself but has now returned. Any ideas?

I think the scanner may have got confused and be expecting another adaptor to be connected. If you slot in the single slide adaptor, wait until all the scan functions become active on-screen, then remove that and insert the SF-210, you might find it works OK.

Hi! My computer (Macbook pro) doesn't seem to recognize my Nikon Coolscan IV software and I get the following message

You've not said what the message is but I suspect that the software is too old to be used on the macbook if it is running OS X 10.7 (Lion) or if you are running snow leopard, it may be a non-intel version of the software. It may be asking you to instal rosetta which would be on your snow leopard instal disk.

If the Nikon website does not have updated software you could try vuescan which according to this page http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/nikon_coolscan_iv_ed.html does work with the film scanner and you can download a demo version which you can trial before you buy. Hope this helps.

According to the Nikon site the software for the Coolscan is not compatible for Mac OS Lion, you need to purchase silverfast to get it to work see http://www.scandig.com/filmscanner/nikon/nikon-coolscan-v-ed.html silverfast can be bought from http://www.silverfast.com/ you can download a demo from here to see if it works.

Recently upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Where can I get correct drivers to run with my Nikon Super Coolscan slide scanner LS-4000 ED model. I have Nikon Scan 3.0 twain software. Stu Milligan

Hello there.
This will help you if you have 64-bit Windows 7, because officially, there is not windows 7 64 bit driver.
Just read and do everything.

http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/coolscan-vista-64.html
Otherwise, if you have windows 7 32bit click here:

To check bits, go right click on My Computer, Properties, and you will see it.
Sincerely,

Nikon Coolscan V ED doesn't work on Windows 7, worked fine on XP, installed on Windows 7, but says Twain can't be found.

Nonsense. Nikon's own site says their scanners don't support Windows7 and suggests using third party software.

Try a good scanner program called vuescan. Much better than Nikon software. I have been using on XP for a long time and no problems

Launching my scanning software launches my browser, then crash

The setup may be accessing your browser for registration of the product. This could be causing your firewall to stop it as it doesn't recognise the request. You need to allow the programme associated with the product to access the internet.

Nikon Coolscan 9000 not recognized by XP computer anymore....

I read and would like to thank, the person who mentioned this as a solution. It was stated that if you have more than one firewire on your computer, when you open the Nikon, both signals, or whatever happens in computerland, don't connect. Upon removing the drive in the other firewire, Nikon clicks in everytime. Answer: have only ONE active firewire at a time. You may need to unplug the cable to the scanner and reconnect. But that's it. I've not had any problems since
