Please confirm whether you are using external or internal speakers. If those are internal then it may be because of unavailability of the sound card drivers. Try to install those drivers and you will be able to hear the sound from inbuilt laptop speakers. Do let me know your laptop make and the operating system which you are using. I will send the direct link to you.
its just because the drivers were not loaded install the sound drivers from the CD that came with the PC or if using a sound card other then the inbuilt one then the CD which came with the card will have the drivers!!

its a Sony Camera or MP3 Player, the procedure is somewhat same, there might be a USBcable that came along with the SONY hardware, a driver CD (If it requires Special Software for Data transfer) Just connet the one of the USBcable to USBslot of SONY hardware and the other end to the Laptop USBSlot. Vista is USB ready and will autodetect what is connected and if tyour Hardware is not too Latest then Vista will have inbuilt drivers, just follow the onscreen instructions,If it ask for driver insert the accompanying CD and it will search for drivers and install it.please mention the Model no.
First go to control panel, sounds and audio devices
go to the audio tab and make sure that your usb device is selected for audio playback
then, unconnect the headphones and restart your computer
after restarting, connect the headphones and Speakers , it should work
