Question about Konica Minolta DiMAGE S414 Digital Camera

Data panel looks broken - no information showing

Went to use my camera and the data panel on the top has a black smear running vertically. Turning the mode dial on and to different options does not change the display. It takes pictures but I am really working "in the dark". I figure it needs repair but looking for some idea of what this entails and what cost might be associated. Thank you for your help.

Need date to show on photo

The camera records the date (and a lot more) with every picture in its EXIF data, but won't deface your pictures by scrawling a string of digits across them. Any photo editing program should be able to show you this data, and allow you to put arbitrary text on top of the image. If you want to print this information, consult the documentation for whatever program you're using. Depending on the program and printer, you may be able to print the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back.

How do I know what f stop and shutter speed my camera used after a picture was already taken? I need the information for a photography class. It shows it when the picture is being taken but I didn't...

All of that data is stored with the picture. Transfer your pictures to your computer. Any competent photo cataloging program will show you the data. For example, in Nikon ViewNX2 if you double-click a picture, you'll see it larger and with a panel to the right showing the data.

Not getting date on downloaded pictures

The date and time (and a lot of other information) is always stored with the picture file in what's called the EXIF data. By default this is not shown on top of the image since neither the camera nor any photo viewing program knows which portion of your photograph is unimportant and can be obscured by this data.

Any photo editing program should be able to show you this data, probably in a separate window. Most photo printing software likewise can print this data, either on top of the picture or in the margins or on the back. Please refer to the documentation for whatever program(s) you're using.

Coolpix 5700 Image Smearing

It sure sounds like the CCD is acting hinky on you from time to time. Check out
and call the 800 number in the advisory for better advice from Nikon repair people. This problem seems to be manifesting itself with lots of different kinds of screen displays. Mine just went black. Nikon was very good about making the free repair - all I paid was the cost of sending the camera to them. Don't send your battery, memory card, camera strap or lens cover. All they need is the camera body.

Digital Camera and Video Phone Number 1 800 222 7669 - it's automated, just say your model number, then "no" to accessories, then "no" to connection problems, then "picture" for ccd issues. Its that easy!

Vertical Smears (bands)

Your camera sensor is busted, or at least the chip that detects white balance. It is a common result of mishandling or pointing the lens at a very bright light like the sun. If you have the product warranty then have it replaced. If not bring it to a camera technician and have the faulty electronics repaired...

White bands and very white exposure is the common result of a faulty white balance or auto exposure function of your camera that went bust.

Black screen when looking through eyepiece

if camera will only display black screen, there's probobly some kind of blocking in the lense. try restarting the camera. first save all data from memory-card, then restart it, unpug everything you can, take out batteries, and leave it alone for a day. if problem aint solved and you dont have the professional knowladge to open the camera and search for the disruption, you should take it to the store.

SD Memory Card

The data on the SD Memory Card can be broken up into five separate folders (where applicable): [DCIM]: The images in this folder (e.g. IMGA0001.JPG) are recorded in the JPEG format. [MISC]: Files in which DPOF Data has been set to the image are in this folder. Slide show data created by SD-MovieStage Ver. 2.5 are also stored in this folder (e.g. AUTPLY0.MRK). [SD_AUDIO]: Stores music data files (e.g. AOB001.SA1) recorded by the SD-Jukebox Ver.4. [SD_VIDEO]: MPEG4 moving pictures are recorded in ASF format (e.g. MOL001.ASF). It can be played back with Windows Media Player 6.4 or later. [SD_VOICE]: Folder in which voice data files (e.g. MOB001.VM1) are stored.
