Most likely a problem with the unit's mechanism---if possible take a look inside to see if a coin or something that does not belong is inside the unit.

mechanism could have an alignment problem or a broken part.

When I put a cd/dvd in, it wont read it, and just spits it back out

Possible that the optical unit is not reading and might be defective.
If so you might have to replace, or use an external drive.
BBut make sure the DVD driver is intact, or reinstall to check once again if there is any hardware conflict.
If not the hardware is faulty. clean the lens eye and try .

The DVD player won't work; it spits the the DVD back out

If it is a burnt dvd, it might not play that format. If it isn't, I would take back the tv to where you got it from and get your miney back.

Picture jumps when i turn on my console

it could be your laser needs cleaning, strip the machine down and take apart your dvd drive casing. get a cotton earbud and spit on it a little, in a very careful clockwise motions (dont put too much pressure on) clean the laser eye with the cotton earbud (with the spit on it). you can also use alcohol but i dont like this as it can sometimes leave a little film over the laser.

put everything back together then try again if its ok you have fixed it, if its still the same let me know and ill find a guide on how to adjust your laser unit and put the power up slightly.

DVD loader mechanism

It is called the slider assy. The slider moves the laser assy back to home or start position. It is a small belt underneath or there is gunk or hair in the gear mechanism. A very common problem with CD/DVD players/recorders. Very good though that you saw it was not comming back to home place. I wish I had a manual to assist you but I do not. Im telling you the most common problems with the slider mechanism. Good Lck
