Is my hard drive dying?

I have started to have problems with my unit. I can't tell you what happened when the problems started because I wasn't watching television at the time, but when I started to look into the problem, the "Welcome - powering up" screen was showing for a long time and both lights on the front of the unit were on. The HDD light was yellow and the DVD light was orange.

After trying several buttons, I finally unplugged the unit and plugged it back in. That seemed to work at the time. Tivo started up again. But I also noticed that the Tivo start up pictures were jerky. It would play, then pause for a second, then play some more. Eventually, I got to the main Tivo menu and I noticed the same thing happening. The background image would move, then pause, then move some more.

When I tried to do something like watch live t.v., the same thing happened. Sometimes the picture would become very fractured for a few seconds (like it was in pieces), then it would resume.

Eventually, the same thing would happen again and again. After a few minutes, the two front lights would come on and it would go back to the powering up screen. Sometimes I'd get a blank grey screen. Unplugging and plugging in the unit caused Tivo to reboot and again I'd get the same jerky picture, then it would crash again.

Is there anything I can do to repair this, and is it something that can even be repaired, short of having a new hard drive installed or something equally as drastic?
