Wow, Im amazed at the guy who threw his WD into the freezer for a week after a fatal crash and was able to get most of his stuff back! I was so frustrated after my second WD crashed that I gave up and used it as a door stopper. I was too bummed out to even bother returning it for an exchange, and when I did think of doing that, it was too late. I decided never to buy WD again, their drives are pure junk! Reply to:My Computer does not show: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB external USB hard drive)
It's not a new hard drive casing that you need, rr_atl, it's a replacement power supply. Western Digital is well know for selling very poorly manufactured power supplies with this hard drive series. The problem you described is a bad power brick.
if its your motherboard that crashed then ther is no problem with your hard disk. connect your hard disk to any other computer and you can access all the files in it.
if it is your harddsik that crashed then try recovery utilities like western digital data storege manger or any other disk recovery tool available for free. if still it fails then you can recover your data if you hand over your hard disk to the nearest service centre. but recover from a hard disk only if its very valuable. thay will charge you per MB of data recovered
Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.
Did you buy it from a store or somebody you know? if you bought it from someone you know..it could just be a hunk of junk or have a virus in it or something. if you bought it from the store...make sure its compatible with your computer. if it is compatible and it still doesnt work....try calling customer service or just go to where you bought it and exchange it for a different one. hope this helps!
