Have you tried opening up the radio and spraying contact cleaner into the volume potentiometer? This is a common problem in older electronics. The RF 888 has 4 screws on the back. Remove those and you can lift off the back cover. (Be careful because those screws pass through the center of the radio and hold the front cover in place.) Get some electronic cleaner at Radio Shack and spray it into the small opening on the side of the volume control. Rotate the volume several times and let the spray evaporate and see if things sound better.

Low volume controll

In recent years public service and all land mobile has moved to narrow band FM from the old 12.5khz or 5khz bandwidth FM to new 2.5 and 1.25 khz format.
The older scanners will play these transmissions with much lower volume and there is nothing that can be done to the scanner to solve this.
You can buy an amplified speaker and use that to further boost the audio or just replace the scanner with a new scanner built by Uniden or GRE (General Research Electronics) who make almost every scanner on the market. Both are good units.

Hi, my name is John. Welcome to FixYa. Turn your volume up to MAX, then turn your RF GAIN to MAX. If same, plug in a external speaker in back of radio into the external speaker jack. see what happens. If loud, re-place the speaker in the radio. Let me know how it goes, glad to help you and thanks for choosing FixYa....John

Audio is very scratchy/static

If it makes a scratchy sound when the volume is turned up and down then the carbon contacts on the volume control are most likely the culprit you can attempt to clean them with rubbing alchol and a Q-tip.

Have a Motorola XV2100 VHF two way radio that works well except the volume control must be turned all the way up so you can hear it. The radio is about 5 years old and was never used very hard. Even with...

Hi Ed,
The VHF radio that is quiet, does the Speaker have a rattle, even very slight? if so that speaker could be faulty, and /or also does the volume control make a scratchy noise when you rotate it?
if so this could be faulty try some CRC down the shaft let it sit for say 15 minutes then rotate the conrol from stop to stop a few times.
To service--- well, would pay you to get a quote first from one or more service establishments if repairs are required.
Good luck,
John.

Bad reception w/ Panasonic RF-544

I solved the problem, but I did not "fix" the problem. Rather than rig an antenna to the old Panasonic RF-544 radio, I put it upstairs where it has good reception. I put the new Sony ICF-38 downstairs where it brings in the stations I listen to. The advertsizing claim for the Sony ICF-38 is that it has "Good Sound and High Sensitivity." I believe it does have "high sensitivity" because even in the basement it brings in my desired stations. (I am still curious to know if I could have rigged an antenna to the old Panasonic RF-544.)
