Milwaukee 28V Lithiom-Ion Battery loses power in storage

If I leave it for several weeks it goes dead. It recharges fine and seem to provide plenty of power while in use. I bought it used. Is it a problem that can be fixed? How can I measure its performance against a new battery standard?

It is not recommended to leave the battery installed in the drill while not in use. The system of the drill will eventually pull the battery down, especially if the battery has had a lot of use. When the battery begins to weaken it will not hold its charge as long.

If you haven't, try charging the battery, 24 hours max and then keep it detached from the drill for several weeks. Then try it aand see how much power you have left. If it is low or depleted, battery is weak.

Generally, When your have the 18V milwaukee drill, you had better to use the same voltage battery charger to charge the battery. it will be more safe.

I charge my batteries but when I use them they go dead very fast

Your batteries no longer hold charge as deeply as they once were capable. Typical symptom of rechargeable batteries. You need to replace them.

Battery smoked during charging. How do I fix? What's wrong with it?

If your battery smoked, one or more of the cells inside burned up or shorted out. Unfortunately there is no way to fix a battery unless you have several bad batteries and the amount of patience reuqired to test individual cells and get enough to reassemble one good battery. You'll be further ahead to buy a new battery. Shop around the net, battery prices vary a lot but you are looking at spending around $135 for a new battery.

My 28v milwaukee batteries do not last any time and they are only a couple of years old

Unfortunately even rechargable batteries have a limited lifespan. Two years is good, if you get three years out of one you're doing very well. Lifespan is determined by how much you use then, how many recharges you put on them and how far down you drain them between charges. The more power you take out of a battery before charging it back up the better. Also, there are no repairable parts inside a battery and no way to recondition them once they're worn out. Sorry, not what you want to hear, but the only fix is to buy a new battery.

Losing charge quickly on my 28v batteries

How old are they? You can expect one year out of these batteries, and that is about it. I have boxes full of dead batteries, hoping they will be worth something someday as rare chemicals. No, just saving up for a trip to the recycling bin. But every year I buy a new set, mark the with a sharpie, that is how I know they only last a year, because I have been doing it for 10 years. Hope this helps.

Why my 28v doesn't fully charge. when charging indicator light is red. there is 4 charge indicator. when it reach 2 green light comes on showing fully charged. you would use it for about 20 minutes and...

One or more cells of the battery have gone bad. The technique of measuring the state of charge of the battery is VERY limited.

I would recommend letting the battery cool after charging... THEN in a day, charge it again without using it. Do this for several days and see if the battery improves. If not, time for new battery.

DO NOT discharge these batteries beyond the point where the tool starts to slow down. You will reverse charge the weakest cell from the ones still deliveing power and the reverse charge will permanently damage the weakest cell.
