Question about Olympus WS-311M Digital Voice Recorder

3 Answers

HI, I have 2 problems: 1/ After downloading some lectures into my MacBook computer as wavefiles, and then erasing them from the recorder, i am getting this message: "Can't make the system file. Connect to PC and delete unnecessary file". I have done this operation many times w/o incident. I can't figure out what to do and the message blocks all other functions as long as its there in the window. 2/ Can I, or how can I get these wavefiles into a format that I can download and play on my iphone/ipod?

The ipod only supports MP4 video/audio, you would need to get some software which will convert the WAV files to MP4. As to the recorder have you tried to format it? after all it is a storage device

A selected file can be erased from a folder.

    (1)
    Press the Folder button (left
button underneath the display) to choose a folder.

    -
Every time the Folder button is
pressed, it cycles through folders and the List display will appear (chapter
1.8). The recorder will say the name of the folder.

    (2)
Press the plus or minus (up or
down) button to choose the file you want to erase. The recorder will bleep by
each button press but it will not speak the name of the file.

    (3)
    Press the Erase button
(separate button outside the circle formation at
    7 o’clock
    position).

    -
    The “Cancel” indicator flashes.

    (4)
Press the plus button to choose
“Erase”. The unit will say “start erase”.

    (5)
    Press the OK (centre) button.

    -
    The display changes to “File
Erase!” and erasing will start. “Erase Done” is displayed when the file is
erased and the unit will say “erased finished”. File numbers will be reassigned
    automatically.

    -
If you don’t press a button the
unit will say “cancel erase” and go back to the list of files.

If you format the recorder, all files will be removed and all
function settings will return to defaults except date and time settings.
Transfer any important files to a computer before formatting the recorder.

    If
the recorder is formatted, data for guidance, alarm playback, and
starting/closing tune when the power is turned On/Off will also be erased and
these features will not be available in the future. If you erase data by
mistake, connect the recorder to a computer and use DSS Player to copy it to
    the recorder

Note once a recording has been erased, you cannot retrieve it.

Erasing messages one by one

1 Press ERASE while playing back the massage you want to erase or press ERASE for more than 1 second during stop mode.

A beep will sound and the message number and "ERASE" will flash while the first and last 5 seconds of message is played back 10 times

WMA is a windows standard. You can get the free components for Quicktime from Microsoft's web site. This should solve your problem.

Not playing full recording

Hi,
Maybe it's the preview play option of the player that you are using. It only plays a part of the recording for you to identify if it is the right recording that you are trying to find because the recorded allows you to record more than one file.

Erasing

I had the same problem. I downloaded the instruction pamphlet at http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/vtrek/download/manual/ws/man_ws100_ws200s.pdf and reformatted the recorder. It seems to work fine now.

Formatting the Recorder (FORMAT)
If you format the recorder, all function settings will return to their defaults.
All files stored in the recorder will be deleted.
If you have important files that you want to save, connect the recorder to a computer and
transfer those files from the recorder to the computer before formatting the device.
1 Press the MENU button.
2 Press the FF or REW button to choose “FORMAT”.
3 When the PLAY button is pressed, “nO” is displayed.
4 Press FF or REW to select “yES”, and press the
PLAY button.
After “ARE yOU SURE” is displayed, “nO” will be displayed.
5 Press FF or REW to select “yES”, and press the
PLAY button.
“DONE” displays when formatting ends.
s It may take up to several tens of seconds to finish the initialization. Do not remove the battery or detach
the battery compartment from the recorder during that time. Otherwise data may be damaged.
s Never format the recorder from a PC.
s When the recorder is formatted, all the stored data, including locked files, are erased.

Recorder says "PLEASE DOWNLOAD FILES," but there are no files to download

The DS-2 has a format option in the menu under submenu. After you choose start you will see a progress bar and it should return to full record time. Use on a MAC seems to cause the reduced record time more often than on a PC.

Unlocking Locked Digital Recorder

Very frustrating for my technophobe journalist wife but changing the format is the solution and it's not as easy as it sounds. To avoid 'struggling for hours', olympus should have included something like the following instructions: access the options via the menu button (pressing it for a few seconds) then choose format with ff or rew but wait for 'yes' to appear and not just for 'no' to dissappear. Then  press play and wait for 'are you sure' to cross the screen and  choose 'yes' again and wait again for the 'done' message. Eureka, you can start recording again.  Fiddly enough, so without proper instructions...!  Hope this helps.
